Paris Jackson is setting the record straight after facing backlash over her decision to perform on June 25—the anniversary of her father Michael Jackson’s death.
The 27-year-old singer is currently on tour with Incubus and Manchester Orchestra, and one of the dates on their tour happened to land on what’s understandably a heavy day for her and her family.
“So, people are mad again,” Paris wrote in an Instagram Story on June 13, according to the Independent. “One of the tour dates I’m supposed to be going out on tour with Incubus and Manchester Orchestra happens to be June 25, which is a very negative anniversary for me in my life and my family.”
She added some context for why the performance was scheduled that day: “So, what I guess I have to explain to these people is that when…you’re not headlining these shows, you don’t pick what date you perform. So [what], I’m gonna tell ’em, ‘Sorry, guys, we can’t perform on this date?’”
And in classic Paris fashion, she closed her message with, “F–k you.”
Paris—daughter of Michael Jackson and Debbie Rowe—has never been one to sugarcoat things. In fact, she’s spoken up before about how she chooses to honor her late father. Last August, she explained why she didn’t post a birthday tribute on what would’ve been Michael Jackson’s 65th.
“Today is my dad’s birthday and back when he was alive, he used to hate anybody acknowledging his birthday,” she said in a video at the time. “He actually didn’t want us to even know when his birthday was because he didn’t want us to throw a party or anything like that.”
Though she didn’t post about it on social media, she did give her dad a subtle shoutout during a live show that same night.
