Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have taken the next step in setting up their charitable organization.
Earlier this year, news was leaked that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were planning to put up their own non-profit following their decision to step down from their royal duties.
The royal couple announced the name of their future organization in April in a statement: “Before Sussex Royal, came the idea of ‘Arche’ — the Greek word meaning ‘source of action.’ We connected to this concept for the charitable organization we hoped to build one day, and it became the inspiration for our son’s name.”
Prince Harry and Meghan launch the Archewell website – archewell.com – this week, without an announcement.
The minimalist website only features the meaning behind their organization’s name: “Arche” – Greek word meaning “source of action”; and “Well” – “a plentiful source or supply; a place we go to dig deep.” It also provides an option for people to subscribe to emails about the foundation’s future projects, including activities and initiatives.
The couple have been busy taking part in charitable endeavors since relocating to the U.S. amid the coronavirus pandemic – from donating the earnings from their May 2018 wedding broadcast to the U.K. charity Feeding Britain, personally delivering meals to people living with critical illnesses through Project Angel Food, bringing some comfort to vulnerable families during this difficult time, reading a story to help raise funds for kids struggling due to school closures amid the coronavirus pandemic, cooking and chatting with the Homies of Homeboy Industries, an organization working to improve the lives of formerly incarcerated and previously gang-involved people in L.A., and more.
In September, they signed a production deal with streaming service Netflix to produce films and series to highlight issues they’re passionate about as well as issues that their non-profit, Archewell, supports.
“Our lives, both independent of each other, and as a couple have allowed us to understand the power of the human spirit: of courage, resilience, and the need for connection,” the Duke and Duchess of Sussex said in a statement at the time. “Through our work with diverse communities and their environments, to shining a light on people and causes around the world, our focus will be on creating content that informs but also gives hope.”
While they’ll be working on this project from behind the scenes, Prince Harry and Meghan haven’t totally shied away from on-cam work – Harry recently appeared in the Netflix documentary about the Paralympics, Rising Phoenix, and Meghan narrated the Disney+ documentary Elephant earlier this year.
