Grammy-nominated rapper Nipsey Hussle was killed in Los Angeles on Sunday (March 31). He was 33.
Nipsey, whose real name is Ermias Davidson Asghedom, was reportedly shot multiple times outside his clothing store, Marathon Clothing Company, in South L.A. He was rushed to the hospital, along with two other victims of the shooting. The Victory Lap rapper later died of his injuries, while the other two remain in critical condition.
According to Mike Lopez of the Los Angeles Police Department, the shooting occurred at approximately 3:20 p.m. in the 3400 block of Slauson Avenue, NBC reports.
Nipey grew up in the Crenshaw neighborhood of Los Angeles and became a member of the Rollin’ 60s gang in his teens. Later, he became a community organizer and was a part of the Destination Crenshaw project.
“Me being a human comes before me being an artist,” he told Billboard last year. “I want to affect change and I want to impact the communities that I grew up in, and the ones like it.”
Many in the entertainment industry are mourning his passing – his fans, friends and colleagues taking to social media to pay tribute to the fallen stinger.

“My whole energy is just at a low right now hearing this. We just linked for the first time in years and said we were gonna do a new song this summer cause it had been too long. You were having the best run and I was so happy watching from distance fam nobody ever talks down on your name you were a real one to your people and to the rest of us. I’m only doing this here cause I want the world to know I saw you as a man of respect and a don. Rest easy my g.”

“Sad to see you go Nip, I’m only finding peace in knowing you are blessed. As you know, I was honored to share in such an amazing year with you musically. We spoke abt how they let the “real ones” in the building and how the Grammys “got it right” this time. I would gauge everyone’s music credibility based on if they mentioned you. “Don’t pair me or compare me, unless the said party is a rare breed…” – self
You definitely are a rare breed and I thank you for being genuine to me and in your mission to empower your people…Always love.”
J Cole via Twitter:

Nas via Instagram:
“We are at a great loss today. This hurts. Straight to the point. It’s dangerous to be an MC. Dangerous to be a b-ball player. It’s dangerous to have money. Dangerous To Be A Black Man. So much hatred. We live like our brothers and sisters in third world countries live. Right in America. Decisions we make about our own life be based on decisions cuz we might not live. Its so deep rooted. It’s not a easy fix. Hard to fix anything when kids are still living in poverty.
I ain’t shutting up though, Nipsey is a True voice. He will never be silenced. He still is A stand up General for the People who never left his people. He is Loved by the people. Prayers for his family. Let’s keep pushing Truth for The Man. Love You King Nipsey Hussle/ Ermias Asghedom.”
