What is Regé-Jean Page’s most swoon-worthy line as the Duke Of Hastings in Bridgerton?
That’s one question many would answer with: “I burn for you” – y’know, from that scene of the Duke and Daphne’s wedding night.
If you’re one of them, sorry to break it to you, but he didn’t actually say that.
During an appearance on Variety‘s Making a Scene, Regé sets the record straight about whose line that actually was.
“I do not say, ‘I burn for you.’ It’s not my line!” he says. Apparently, that was Phoebe Dynevor’s line.
Mind blown, yet?
A quick review of that scene from the episode “The Duke And I” will confirm that it’s actually Daphne (Phoebe) who confesses that line to Simon (Regé) on their wedding night.
But there are actually a lot of times the word “burn” comes up during that entire dialogue, so the confusion is totally understandable. And even Regé agrees.
“Everyone clearly was feeling very burned for, which I’ll take as a compliment,” he adds.
Fans have been swooning over their Daphne and Simon’s romance on the first season of Bridgerton, with many commenting how Phoebe and Regé’s onscreen chemistry was so off-the-charts.
During a recent appearance on The Tonight Show, Phoebe admitted that “it’s hard not to” have chemistry with her co-star. It was actually something they discovered early on – while they were still rehearsing the dances.
“We both had dance rehearsals together, and we were both kind of nervous about the dancing part. I remember we had a few rehearsals and one of them got recorded so we got to watch it back and we were like, ‘Oh, eye contact really does a lot of the work,’ ” she said.
But as fans eagerly await for Bridgerton’s second season to drop, it was announced back in April that Regé will NOT be returning to reprise his role as the Duke of Hastings.
Regé also went on social media to bid Bridgerton farewell.
“The ride of a life time,” he wrote on Instagram. “It’s been an absolute pleasure and a privilege to be your Duke. Joining this family – not just on screen, but off screen too. Our incredibly creative and generous cast, crew, outstanding fans – it’s all been beyond anything I could have imagined. The love is real and will just keep growing ❤️❤️❤️💫”
Phoebe opened up about her reaction to Regé’s exit during this week’s Variety Awards Circuit Podcast.
“I had a bit of a heads up, so I knew,” the 26-year-old actress said. “But yeah, I guess it is a spanner. But again, the show centers around the Bridgertons and there are eight books. And I think maybe the fans of the books were more aware of that happening than the fans of the show. I think the fans of the books know that every episode is about a different sibling.”
She also shared what fans can look forward to in season 2.
“And we’re very much passing on the baton to the lovely Jonathan [Bailey], who plays Anthony. And that will be the main storyline of season 2 and the story arc of season 2” she continued, adding, “We were all aware of that. Obviously, it’s sad to see [Regé] go but I’m looking forward to being reunited with my family.”
