It’s a very emotional time for Riverdale fans. It’s been announced that the long-running CW show is coming to an end soon.
On Thursday (May 19), the network revealed that the series will be concluding with its upcoming seventh season.
Mark Pedowitz, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The CW Network, unveiled the network’s fall schedule during upfront on Thursday. He stated that the final episodes of Riverdale will be debuting midseason on Tuesday nights, and declared:
“[We will] be saying goodbye to an iconic CW series that shaped and defined popular culture.”
The show, created by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, is ‘inspired’ by the beloved and iconic Archie comics and stars KJ Apa, Cole Sprouse, Lili Reinhart, Camila Mendes, Madelaine Petsch and more. It became a smash hit upon its debut in 2017.
Riverdale’s final season will begin in 2023 on The CW.
Following the announcement, ET spoke with series star KJ Apa on the red carpet at the event. KJ, who plays Archie Andrews on the show, shared his thoughts on the bittersweet news:
“I feel sad, you know, it’s going to be really hard to say goodbye to Archie, to Riverdale, to the sets, to our crew.
We’ve created so many memories on this show, for both ourselves and for the fans, so it’s going to be hard.”
He did also share past sentiments from his co-stars Cole and Camila about now being perhaps the ideal time for the series to wrap up and bid their farewells:
“I think it’s perfect – all great things have to come to an end. I feel good about it.”
