Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively are total Hollywood #couplegoals – from their amazing fashion sense and effortless A-game to their penchant for hilariously trolling each other on social media.
They’ve been married for almost a decade, share three children together, and still appear more loved-up than ever. It’s no secret that their friendship was the foundation of their relationship.
“We were buddies for a long time, which I think is the best way to have a relationship, to start as friends,” Ryan told Vanity Fair in a 2016 interview.
At the time, he also opened up about the first date they went on together: A double date – and they were on dates with other people.
“About a year after Green Lantern had come and gone and we were both single we went on a double date—she was on a date with another guy and I was on a date with another girl—and it was like the most awkward date for the respective parties because we were just like fireworks coming across,” he shared.
In a recent interview on the SmartLess podcast, he once again shared that funny anecdote – and revealed what happened AFTER that fateful date night.
“I met Blake on the darkest crease in the anus of the universe called Green Lantern,” Ryan told hosts Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett. “We were friends and buddies and about a year and a half later we went on a double date but we were with dating separate people. We hung out and we always kind of kept in touch sort of casually and next thing you know, she was going to Boston. I was going to Boston and I said I’ll ride with you.”
“I was just begging her to sleep with me,” he jokingly admitted.
Ryan describes their blossoming romance as something “like out of a fairytale,” adding, “A week later I was like, ‘We should buy a house together.’ And we did.”
They’ve also figured out what works best for the when it comes to raising three children, working on their relationship and juggling their successful careers.
“I’m present with my kids and my wife and my marriage is incredibly important to me and that friendship is important to me,” he shared. “Blake and I don’t do movies at the same time. When Blake is ready to do some stuff, I’ll step down and then we go back and forth. She’ll do a film and I’ll be with her on location hanging out with the kids.”
Ryan also gave props to Blake’s parenting skills, particularly when it comes to homeschooling amid the pandemic.
“They [James and Inez] had a tough time,” he said about online school for his two older daughters. “I was seeking out external help left and right. I was reading books. I was trying someway to steer the ship. Blake was so much better at it then I was because I’m also a child.”
