Zayn Malik is getting very, very candid when it comes to One Direction. And his statements are shedding more light into why he decided to leave the hugely successful band at the peak of their phenomenal success.
Let’s put ourselves back in March 2015. We’re all loving these five adorable guys – Zayn and his bandmates Liam Payne, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, and Harry Styles. They’re rocking our world, hit song after hit song, and we’re all in a dreamy One Direction haze.
And then it happens: Zayn officially left the band. And hearts break across the universe.
At the time, One Direction said in a statement:
“We’re really sad to see Zayn go, but we totally
respect his decision and send him all our love for the future. The past five years have been beyond amazing, we’ve gone through so much together, so we will always be friends.”
At the time, Zayn said about his leaving:
“My life with One Direction has been more than I could ever have imagined. But, after five years, I feel like it is now the right time for me to leave the band. I’d like to apologise to the fans if I’ve let anyone down, but I have to do what feels right in my heart. I am leaving because I want to be a normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight.
I know I have four friends for life in Louis, Liam, Harry and Niall. I know they will continue to be the best band in the world.”
And at the time, all everyone could say was, WHY. Why, Universe, why???
Well, in a new interview with British Vogue, Zayn may in his own way be giving us the real answer.
The 25-year-old singer kept it real as he discussed his “four friends for life” who, as it turns out, were never really his friends.
Check it – Zayn revealed that he didn’t actually make any friends during all five years in One Direction:
“I have always been a bit like that, though — always a bit of an island. I don’t like to confer with too many people.
We went from theaters to arenas to stadiums — there was never any sort of bridge between. Just boom, boom, boom. I guess that kind of progression to any mind — but especially when you’re 17, 18 — it kind of affects you a little bit. People take it different ways — especially when there are five different personalities. The relationships had broken apart.”
He also dropped the revelation that he does not speak to Louis, Liam, Harry and Niall anymore:
“Nah. I ain’t spoke to any of them for a long time, to be honest with you. That’s just the way it is. There’s things that happen and things that were said after I left …Snide things. Small things that I would never have expected.
That’s just the way it is. People move on, people grow apart, people grow up.”
Hear that, guys? Zayn was never really friends with any of the other boys. Ouch.
But though apparently he didn’t make any real connection in One Direction, there is someone he’s totally connected with – his girlfriend, Gigi Hadid. And Zayn officially confirmed that he and Gigi are very much together after that very brief parting of ways in March:
“Everything is great. She’s super-organized and I’m really not. It helps that she can get things together for me a little bit. I lean on her a lot.”
And as for the other four guys? Well, in an interview with ET the year that Zayn left, Louis said this:
“I think in any field of work, when you lose someone on your team, obviously it’s hard, but the positive take on the situation is we felt we definitely got closer as a group.”
So maybe those friendships, unlike the ones with Zayn, are genuine – and hopefully still going strong.
