Seriously, why would someone do that?
Ariana Grande just made history for being the youngest ever headliner at Coachella 2019. She also slayed onstage on BOTH weekends – and delighted fans with her very special guests, like NSYNC, Diddy, Nicky Minaj, and more.
So, why would anyone want to throw a lemon at her during her set?
During her performance on the second weekend of the music festival, when Ari was performing “Right There” and “Break Your Heart Right Back, a very yellow lemon sailed through the air, hit Ari squarely on the chest and bounced right off.
The 25-year-old singer was caught by surprise, and called out the perp. “That’s ’cause one of ya’ll threw a lemon at me, s–t,” she said.
But being the consummate performer that she is, the show must go on. And, she put on another amazing performance. Natch.
Remember that “more” part about her special guests that we mentioned earlier? Towards the end of her set, she even brought out a recent collaborator onstage that had fans going wild – none other than Justin Bieber, who sang with her and thirty other artists on Lil Dicky’s recently released climate change anthem “Earth.”
Going back to the lemon thing. A fan was able to capture the whole incident on video and shared it on social media, which outraged other fans who quickly came to her defense on Twitter – including Billie Eilish’s brother, Finneas.
“If you throw a lemon at Ariana Grande, you’re a piece of s–t,” he tweeted.
“…throwing a lemon at Ariana Grande during her #Coachella set?! Really?!?! Grow the heck up, people,” a fan called out on the social media platform.
“Someone threw a lemon at our baby!!! Who the f**k throws lemons at a concert??” another fan tweeted in part.
“Throwing a lemon at Ariana grande? How dare you,” one fan wrote.
Days before she hit the stage for her second Coachella performance, Ari already got candid about what performing is like for her.
On Thursday (April 18), Ari appeared to be feeling a bit low. “I just feel empty and i wanna have more to say / better energy to give to u and rn i don’t have anything. love u. 🖤💻,” she wrote in response to a fan on Twitter.
Fans have since shared messages of support for the “No Tears Left To Cry” songstress, and by Friday, she appeared to be in better spirits.
“lil better. i’m so happy i have y’all. and that y’all hear me and care. Truly,” she told a fan who asked her how she was doing.
On Saturday, Ari shared a quote by Jim Carrey about depression in her Instagram Stories.
“Depression is your body saying, ‘I don’t want to be this character anymore. I don’t want to hold up this avatar that you’ve created in the world. It’s too much for me. You should think of the word ‘depressed’ as ‘deep rest.’ Your body needs to be depressed. It needs deep rest from the character that you’ve been trying to play,” the quote read.
A self-confessed Jim Carrey fan since she was a little girl, she captioned it, “”The whole LOML [love of my life] forever.”
The movie star took notice of her post and went on Twitter to give her some love right back.
Sharing a quote about the philosophy of “Deep Rest,” Jim tweeted, “.@ArianaGrande I read your lovely mention of me and things I’ve said about depression. A brilliant teacher and friend, Jeff Foster was OG on the ‘Deep Rest’ concept.”
“I admire your openness. I wish you freedom and peace,” he added. “I feel blessed to have such a gifted admirer. Happy Easter!”
Seeing his response, Ari went total fangirl mode. “i can’t process this or breathe hold on,” she tweeted in response, adding, “thank u so much for your kindness. 🖤 i don’t think u understand how much i adore u or what u mean to me. thank u for taking the time to share this w me. you are such an inspiration. i can’t wait to tattoo this tweet to my forehead. sending you lots of love & all things happy.”
“jimcarreyfan42 is a very grateful girl rn,” she later added, referring to the AIM username she had when she was in 4th grade.
Jim sure knows how to put a smile on people’s faces.
