Many celebrities have passionately voiced their reactions to the decision of the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade after almost 50 years.
The Supreme Court formally overturning the landmark case will affect the reproductive rights of women all over the country, with the legality of abortion to be decided now on a state-by-state basis.
Taylor Swift:
“I’m absolutely terrified that this is where we are – that after so many decades of people fighting for women’s rights to their own bodies, today’s decision has stripped us of that.”
Phoebe Bridgers:
“I had an abortion in October of last year while I was on tour. I went to Planned Parenthood where they gave me the abortion pill. It was easy. Everyone deserves that kind of access.”
Padma Laksmi:
“People will still get abortions. These procedures won’t stop just because Roe v. Wade is overturned. This will only prevent safe, legal abortions from taking place. The right to decide when to start a family or not is a choice every individual should be able to make on their terms when the time is right for them. This freedom and dignity is something we should all fight to preserve.”
Olivia Rodrigo:
“I’m devastated and terrified. I wanted to dedicate this next song to the five members of the Supreme Court who had showed us that at the end of the day, they truly don’t give a s—t about freedom.”
Billie Eilish:
“Today is a really, really dark day for women in the US. I’m just going to say that because I can’t bear to think about it any longer.”
Pink:
“Let’s be clear: If you believe the government belongs in a woman’s uterus, a gay persons business or marriage, or that racism is okay — THEN PLEASE IN THE NAME OF YOUR LORD NEVER F—KING LISTEN TO MY MUSIC AGAIN. AND ALSO F—K RIGHT OFF> We good?”
Billie Joe Armstrong, announcing that he is renouncing his US citizenship:
“There’s too much f—king stupid in the world to go back to that miserable f—king excuse for a country.”
Sophia Bush:
“They will never end abortion. Only safe abortion. This is not about life. It’s about control. Those motherf—hers.”
Jessica Biel:
“I am enraged. What happened today is not only a disgusting step backward for women – undermining our ability to make decisions for our own bodies… but it’s also dangerous. You didn’t ban abortion, you banned access to SAFE abortion.”
Halle Berry:
“I’m outraged! What the supreme court has done is BULLS—T. Something has to be done! Guns have more rights than women. Stop this war on women & keep your laws off of our bodies. We have to band together & NOT accept this! We can’t just post about it, we must DO SOMETHNG about it.”
Ariana DeBose:
“I have nothing nice to say at this moment in time. Yeah, ain’t NOBODY telling me what I can & can’t do with my body. Ain’t nobody telling me who I get to love or marry for that matter. America… you’re in for the fight of your life.”
John Legend, alongside a video of Capitol Police arriving at the Supreme Court amid protests against the decision:
“Storm troopers on their way to tell women to shut up and accept government mandated childbirth. Sickening.”
Alicia Keys:
“This decision is about more than abortion, its about who has power over you, who has authority to make decisions for you, and who is going to control how your future turns out.”
Ellen DeGeneres:
“Throughout history, women haven’t been treated. Not to vote, or to decide who they marry, and now to make their own decisions about their bodies. But you can trust we will not let this stand, that we will be heard, and we will get the rights we deserve.”
Mark Ruffalo:
“This nation was founded on the separation between church & state. The Supreme Court has now been made illegitimate by destruction of that separation & turned into a political organ of the religious right. We are going to have to fight for the founding principals of our nation.”
Danny DeVito:
“Supreme Court my as*.”
