The fire, which quickly spread across his head, was ignited by stray sparks from a pyrotechnics display.
Tragedy was averted when Ralph Cohen, the executive producer of the advert, rushed on stage and flung his Armani jacket over Jackson’s head, smothering the flames.
But some of Michael’s fried hair stuck to the lining and is now being auctioned by a private owner.
The auction also features a signed box containing chunks of teen idol Justin Beiber’s hair.
The megastar lopped off a tuft and sent it to American TV star Ellen Degeneres after she tweeted: “All I want for my birthday is a lock of Justin Bieber’s hair”.
Ellen then sold the clippings for a staggering £26,700, before handing the cash to charity.
Now, collectibles expert Paul Fraser, who bought Justin’s hair in return for a donation towards a school in the Third World, is selling the locks – estimated to fetch at least £20,000.
Kylie Whitehead, of PFC Auctions, who are selling the lots, told Barcroft Media: âCelebrity hair collecting was popular during Victorian times and in recent years it has become popular again. “A strand of hair is the most personal item that can be added to any memorabilia collection and we are excited to be offering hair from icons such as Michael Jackson and Justin Bieber.”Justin’s locks alone are expected to fetch at least £20,000 because it is in a see-through tub that has been signed by him.”The Michael Jackson hair, we expect, will go for a few thousand, which ins’t bad considering it is a few strands of singed hair.”The items can be bought online at www.pfcauctions.com.
