Taylor Swift has hit a raw nerve with her newest creative endeavor.
The singer is now facing strong criticism over a moment in the music video for her new song “Anti-Hero” off her latest album Midnights.
Taylor is being accused of Fatphobia for a scene in the video. The “Anti-Hero” video shows Taylor critiquing herself as well as satirizing herself, her relationship with the media and her fandom. At one point, she gets on a scale which is shown to read “FAT.”
Referencing Taylor’s own battle with an eating disorder, the video also shows a second version of herself watching her as she stepped on the scale and shaming her for her weight.
Many fans were very critical of this part of the video, specifically her use of the word “fat” for the scene. There have been arguments that what she did just upholds the idea of being fat as a negative thing.
Others, however, defended Taylor, reasoning that the use of the word “fat” is a self-aware and self-critical expression of her feelings about her struggles with body image.
