Matty Healy’s on-stage antics have gotten The 1975 banned from Kuala Lumpur.

On Friday (July 21), the 34-year-old musician is said to have caused his band The 1975 to get kicked out of a festival following his controversial actions during the show.

Outlets report that he gave an impassioned speech on the treatment of LGBTQ+ people by the Malaysian government. He said during the concert:

“I’m f**king furious. That’s not fair on you because you aren’t impassioned of your government. It’s f**king ridiculous t tell people what they can do.”

Matty went on, saying that The 1975 almost backed out of the festival because of the country’s politics, revealing:

“I pulled the show yesterday, and we had a conversation, and we said, ‘We can’t let the kids down because they’re not the government.

If you wanna bring me here, then f**k off. I’ll take your money, you can ban me, but I’ve done this before, and it doesn’t feel good.”

He capped off his speech by kissing his bandmate Ross McDonald. This earned loud cheers from the audience. They played “I Couldn’t Be More In Love” before they left the stage, with Matty telling concertgoers right as the were exiting:

“Alright, we got to go, we just got banned from Kuala Lumpur. See ya later.”

The 1975 cancelled forthcoming shows in Taiwan and Indonesia after their performance in Malaysia was cut short.
