Alan Rickman’s diaries are being published in a book with the title, “Madly, Deeply: The Diaries Of Alan Rickman” — and one entry in particular has captured the interest of fans of the late actor.
These particular diary pages see Alan reflecting on his role as Severus Snape in the Harry Potter film series. He passed away in 2016 at the age of 69 after battling prostate cancer.
In his diary, he wrote about wanting to exit Harry Potter after the second movie back in 2002:
“Talking to [agent] Paul Lyon-Maris about HP exit, which he thinks will happen.”
The entry, dated December 4, 2002, went on with Alan writing:
“But here we are in the project-collision area again. Reiterating no more HP. They don’t want to hear it.”
In another entry, Alan wrote about wanting to leave again after the fourth film, but was convinced to stay. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2005. He wrote:
“Finally, [said] yes to HP 5. The sensation is neither up nor down.
The argument that wins is the one that says: ‘See it through. It’s your story.’”
Another diary excerpt has Alan sharing this about his experience in the role:
“I realize as soon as that [Snape’s] ring and costume go on – something happens. It becomes alien to be chatty, smiley, open. The character narrows me down, tightens me up. Not good qualities on a film set. I have never been less communicative with a crew.
Fortunately, Dan [Radcliffe] fills that role with ease and charm. And youth, he said.”
Alan wrote in another passage:
“… I have finished reading the last Harry Potter book. Snape dies heroically, Potter describes him to his children as one of the bravest men he ever knew and calls his son Albus Severus.”
