There’s a fine line between love and hate.
Nina Dobrev and Paul Wesley had fans swooning with their electric chemistry as Elena Gilbert and Stefan Salvatore on The Vampire Diaries. But, according to Nina, the ‘intense chemistry’ we saw was actually because they “despised each other so much.”
“Paul and I didn’t get along at the beginning of the show. I respected Paul Wesley, I didn’t like Paul Wesley,” Nina dished on Candice King and Kayla Ewell’s Directionally Challenged podcast,. “I remember everyone would walk up to me after the show aired and they’d be like, ‘Are you and Paul dating in real life?'”
“Everyone thought that we had such good chemistry. I realize now that there’s a fine line between love and hate and we despised each other so much that it read as love but… We really just didn’t get along the first five months of shooting,” she recalled.
Gasp! IKR? Major props to their acting skillz!
And as for why they didn’t get along: “When you work with anyone, or spending a lot of time with anyone, little things would annoy you about that,” Nina revealed.
Apparently, the whole not-liking-each-other thing isn’t really uncommon for onscreen couples. “Most of the time, love interests in film and TV don’t get along and that reads as really intense chemistry,” she said.
Somewhere along the way, Paul and Nina had a turning point and eventually ended up becoming best friends. They still see each other a lot, post-TVD!
“Maybe we had a moment where we actually connected, and he looked at me and he was like, ’10 years from now, when we’re not on this show, you’re gonna really miss me. You’re gonna miss these times; you’ll look back, and this is gonna be the good old days. We’ll appreciate each other in 10 years,'” she recalled.
“He was so f–king right. We ended up getting to a good place and it was fine,” Nina continued. “Of everyone, I think I probably see him the most and hang out with him the most. We’re probably the closest. We hang out a lot. We’re really good friends. I love his wife. It’s so funny how time changes everything because I never thought he would be one of my best friends.”
She’s also close friends with co-star Ian Somerhalder, who played Damon Salvatore on the show, and his wife, Nikki Reed. ICYMI, Nina and Ian dated for like three years during the show’s run – from 2011 to 2013. But, hey, some things end, and people move on. And, no, it’s not awkward.
When Nina was asked about her friendship with the couple, “I don’t think that’s weird at all,” she previously shared on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen. “I think that’s great. I think, ‘Why can’t everyone be friends?’ I think that they have a beautiful baby, and they are happy and so am I, and what’s bad about that? I don’t see any problem with that.”
