Kit Connor is opening up about his decision to come out.
In a conversation with British Vogue, the 19-year-old Heartstopper star sole about deciding to come out as bisexual amid the accusations of queerbaiting he faced from fans of the show.
Kit said that despite the overwhelming response to the series, he hadn’t “had a huge problem” with feeling pressure from fans. He shared that he felt “pretty lucky.” When the conversation touched on his decision to come out, he stated:
“I think ‘forced’ isn’t the right word I would use, but I would say that I would have preferred to do it another way.
I also don’t know if I would have ever done it. But at the end of the day I don’t regret it. In many ways it was really empowering.”
Kit later on expressed his disappointment at the reaction:
“I just felt like it wasn’t something I was ready to talk about.
I wasn’t angry., I was just slightly disappointed by this reaction.”
He highlighted how his family was “super accepting and inclusive and wonderful.” But, he added, his experience at school was less positive:
“I was in a very heteronormative atmosphere. It wasn’t hugely inclusive. It wasn’t really accepted in a lot of ways.”
