As Stiles Stilinsky, he had us rooting for him as the only human (read: non-supernatural) member in Scott’s pack in Teen Wolf. He kept us on the edge of our seats in the Maze Runner trilogy. We’ve enjoyed watching him onscreen in a bunch of other films, and we’ve been waiting for more.

We’re talking about none other than Dylan O’Brien. And, while we’ve been eagerly anticipating his return to the screen, it looks like there’s a reason why he’s been keeping on the down low lately. Turns out, he’s been busy working on an exciting new project – one that has him voicing a beloved iconic character in one of the biggest franchises in recent movie history.

It’s just been announced that Dylan will be the voice of Bumblebee in the upcoming origin film, Bumblebee – the character’s solo movie spinoff/prequel about the yellow and black Transformer, per IGN.

ICYMI, in all the previous films, ‘Bee has mostly been talking through his car radio due to damage he had previously sustained. Now, get ready to hear Bumblebee speak, well, Bumblebee, but in his own voice.

This comes as part of a partial reboot of the Transformers mythology, following Michael Bay’s exit from the franchise.

In an interview with IGN, the film’s producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura shared: “Since we were approaching this as an origin story, we felt that it was appropriate that you got to hear his voice.”

“That’s the simple logic that we employed,” he explains, adding,

“The longer term implication of that is different. But the short-term implication of that is, since we really are resetting the mythology, essentially, of who Bumblebee is. And so, that seemed to us to be the appropriate, to get the chance to hear what he sounds like.”

And as for why they chose Dylan, Lorenzo also says that the film’s creatives wanted Bee’s voice to have a youthful quality that reflects his relative inexperience in the story. And according to him, the 27-year-old actor has “that great quality in his voice of youthful exuberance, and also sort of trustworthiness.”

A few lucky fans have gotten the chance to see the movie before it hit theaters, and it looks like they’re digging Dylan as the voice of Bumblebee. “Thankfully, we’ve showed it to a few audiences, and people seem to think that it’d be right and an appropriate voice. You never know, obviously that can be a sensitive thing for people. But it turns out, they imagine his voice that way,” Lorenzo said.

So, who exactly is Bumblebee? He’s a young Transformer – an Autobot (#TeamOptimusPrime) with yellow and black coloring. He used to be Sam Witwicky’s (Shia LaBeouf) car in the earlier films, but in the upcoming origin story, he’s been sent to Earth in the 80s on a secret mission from Optimus Prime himself.

Looks like Bumblebee will be making a lot of history. Aside from being able to hear Bumblebee speak, this is the first Transformers film that will not be directed by Michael Bay. It will be helmed by Travis Knight (Kubo And The Two Strings). Screenwriter Christina Hodson is also the first woman to script a Transformers movie.

With Dylan voicing ‘Bee, and Hailey Steinfeld starring opposite the ginormous robot onscreen, are you guys excited to see the movie?

Bumblebee will hit theaters on December 21.
