No, Zoë Kravitz and Channing Tatum aren’t dating – despite earlier reports that came out this year. They are teaming up for a new movie though and have since struck up a close friendship – close enough that when Zoë gives Channing fashion advice, he listens.
According to Channing, he didn’t even know Zoe personally until recently, when she reached out to him about a role in what will be her directorial debut film, Pussy Island.
“When Zoë called me about this, I was shocked. I didn’t know her,” Channing told Deadline. “I’d watched her in movies, knew she produced High Fidelity and had seen that, but I didn’t know she was creating on a level like this, where she wanted to direct.”
He also opened up about a fashion advice he got from The Batman’s Catwoman actress.
“When someone can just come out and tell me I should not be wearing Crocs, and is so adamant about it, she completely convinced me and I never wear Crocs anymore,” Channing shared of their first meeting.
To which Zoë responded that she was just trying to be a “good friend.”
“I get it, but I totally loved Crocs for a hot second, and in one hang she was like, you can’t ever do that again. And I said, ‘OK, fine.’ “
“Just to be clear, there are people out there who can pull off the Crocs thing; I just wasn’t sure you were one of them,” Zoë clarified.
Channing did stop rocking the footwear though. “I feel cooler, and her point of view on me and Crocs was legit. She had a good argument,” he said, adding, “The one thing I can pull off, is listening.”
As for his role in her upcoming film, he couldn’t help but gush about the opportunity. “No one gives me a chance to play a role like this, everybody throws me down a different alley and expects me to do a certain thing,” he told the outlet.
Still unclear if he will be baring his fit physique in the movie – last month, Channing was joking about having to get better at acting to Kelly Clarkson.
“For someone that has to work out for a job, I promise I would not look like this unless I had to be naked in most of my movies, mostly,” he quipped during an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show, adding, “and at some point I got to get better at acting so I don’t have to be naked in all of them.”
But his new role appears to be a chance for him to flex his acting chops.
“This goes deeper in a direction I’m fascinated by and I’m interested in seeing how people receive this and break it down in their own lives. And what they think the movie means and how would they have made decisions,” he shared.
Zoë also got candid about choosing Channing for the part.
“Chan was my first choice, the one I thought of when I wrote this character,” Zoë said. “I just knew from Magic Mike and his live shows, I got the sense he’s a true feminist and I wanted to collaborate with someone who was clearly interested in exploring this subject matter.”
