Sunday (September 19) night’s 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards saw TV’s biggest names gathered in a star-studded celebration of television greatness over the past year.
After last year’s hybrid show, Cedric the Entertainer led this year’s in-person ceremony that featured plenty of Hollywood highlights – from stunning red carpet fashion to touching tributes, historic wins, powerful speeches and unforgettable performances.
Mandy Moore slayed on the red carpet in a gorgeous Carolina Herrera gown. Billie Porter brought his style A-game in a striking all-black Ashi ensemble and Lorraine Schwartz jewelry. Meanwhile, Anya Taylor-Joy turned heads with her Emmys debut in haute couture Christian Dior.
The evening kicked off with a fun tribute to Biz Markie, where Cedric enlisted the help of stars like LL Cool J, Mandy Moore, Susan Kelechi Watson, Anthony Anderson, Tracy Ellis Ross, Brendan Hunt, Lil Dicky, Billy Porter and Rita Wilson on the late music star’s “Just A Friend” – and showcased Rita’s rap skills. Kerry Washington remembered the late Michael K. Williams, who passed away earlier this month. Leon Bridges, Jon Batiste and Uzo Aduba honored the entertainers and creatives we’ve lost over the past year in the emotional “In Memoriam” segment.
RuPaul made Emmy history with his 11th Emmy win on Sunday, becoming the most Emmy-awarded Black person in the history. Schitt’s Creek’s Rose family reunited once again with Dan Levy, Catherine O’Hara, Annie Murphy and Eugene Levy hitting the stage to present the awards for Outstanding Comedy Writing and Outstanding Comedy Directing. Conan O’Brien seemingly pulled a Kanye, crashing Stephen Colbert’s acceptance speech for his Outstanding Variety Special Live win – Stephen, who’s “honored to be superfans of Conan O’Brien,” later revealed he’d invited the veteran late night show host to join him onstage if he won.
Kate Winslet got a standing ovation for her Mare of Easttown win and Jason Sudeikis delivered a touching speech for his Ted Lasso win, paying tribute to his family, mentors and teammates: “I wouldn’t be here without those three things in my life.”
