Simu Liu has got the role of a lifetime. And it may have all began with a single tweet!

The 32-year-old actor is making history by being the first Asian Marvel superhero lead. He’s starring as Shang-Chi in Marvel’s highly-anticipated film Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings, which opened in theaters Friday, September 3.

Recently, the Kim’s Convenience star opened up about how a particular tweet he wrote years ago may have had a hand in paving the way for him to get the coveted role of Shang-Chi. Simu said this to USA Today:

“I just tweeted it out into the ether because I love superhero movies. It’s great that I’m getting all the credit now retroactively for getting it right, but I’m sure there are thousands of tweets if you go back far enough of me not getting it right or predicting the future totally incorrectly.”

Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton shared his thoughts on this, stating that:

“[I don’t] think anybody at Marvel saw that tweet, [but] it’s a great story so I’m not gonna try to stamp it out. But I really do believe in putting things out there and saying you’re going to get this thing and really going for it.”

Back in 2018 when it was first announced that Marvel was going to be making a Shang-Chi movie, Simu tweeted at Marvel, saying:

“OK @Marvel, are we gonna talk or what #ShangChi”

In 2019 when he got the role, he retweeted that tweet, hilariously writing:

“Well sh*t”

Whatever led to him landing the role, we can all agree that Simu Liu is perfect casting for the part!
