And The 2021 Oscar Award Goes To…

The 93rd Academy Awards celebrated the biggest films of the past year on Sunday (April 25) night.

After being postponed for two months amid the ongoing pandemic, Hollywood’s biggest night went down as an in-person event at the Dolby Theater and Union Station in Los Angeles, California. It was a memorable evening of revelations and firsts, as well as some truly priceless moments from the stars.

Despite being married since 2021, Carey Mulligan and Marcus Mumford only just made their red carpet debut at this year’s Oscars as the rocker sweetly supported his wife who’s nominated for her role in Promising Young Woman. Also making their relationship red carpet official are Aaron Sorkin and Paulina Porizkova. There were other red carpet debuts as well – like Halle Berry’s uber short new ‘do and Promising Young Woman screenwriter Emerald Fennell’s baby bump!

Presenters like Zendaya, Questlove, and Brad Pitt, on the other hand, made style statements during awards night.  Z rocked an utterly fab head-turning yellow chiffon cutout gown by Valentino and was commended for wearing her matching yellow face mask for most of the evening. Questlove, on the other hand, went the cozy route for his attire, hitting the red carpet in a pair of metallic crocs. Brad debuted a man bun on the Oscar stage and also shared a hilariously adorable moment with 73-year-old actress Yuh-Jung Youn, who was legit thrilled to “finally” meet him, as he presented her the award for Best Supporting Actress.

More veteran actresses regaled audiences with some of the evening’s most memorable moments – like Frances McDormand ending her acceptance speech with a wolf howl and Glenn Close literally shaking her booty to “Da Butt.” Meanwhile, Daniel Kaluuya actually thanked his parents for having sex – and his mom, who was in the audience, had the most priceless reaction.

Chloe Zhao made history for becoming the first woman of color and only the second woman ever to be named Best Director. Yuh-Jung Youn’s Best Supporting Actress win marks the first time a Korean actress won an acting Oscar. Mia Neal, Jamika Wilson and Sergio Lopez-Rivera won Best Makeup and Hairstyling for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom – making Mia and Jamika the first Black women to win the award.

However, fans weren’t so happy about Naya Rivera and Jessica Walter being left out of the “In Memoriam” segment of the ceremony. There were also comments on how fast the montage was, with some names appearing only appearing for a split second.

The Academy Awards also changed up their order of the awards given out, with Best Picture being announced before Best Actress and Best Actor.

Anthony Hopkins becomes the oldest winner of an acting Oscar after bagging Best Actor awards for his role in The Father – he wasn’t at the ceremony though and was asleep at home when they announced his name (it was 4AM in his homeland in Wales at the time). He belatedly shared his acceptance speech on social media, during which he also honored the late Chadwick Boseman.

“Good morning, here I am in my homeland of Wales and at 83-years-of-age I did not expect to get this award. I really didn’t,” he said. “I am grateful to the Academy and thank you. I want to pay tribute to Chadwick Boseman who was taken from us far too early, and again, thank you all very much. I really did not expect this, so I feel very privileged and honored. Thank you.”
