And The Golden Globe Goes To…

The star-studded 78th Annual Golden Globe Awards brought on the glitz and glam on Sunday (February 28) night’s semi-virtual broadcast.

Hosts Tina Fey and Amy Pohler made Golden Globe history for the award show’s first-ever bi-coastal ceremony amid the ongoing pandemic – Tina was live from The Rainbow Room in New York City while Amy hosted from The Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California.

Among the night’s big winners were Nomadland and Borat Subsequent Moviefilm in the film categories, while Schitt’s Creek, Queen’s Gambit and The Crown dominated the television categories.

Nomadland director Chloe Zhao made history for being one of only two females to win a Best Director award – Barbara Streisand was the first, taking home the award for Yentl in 1984. Many of the night’s winners also used their acceptance speeches to call for inclusivity and diversity in the entertainment industry, as well as shine the light on the nation’s ongoing battle against COVID-19.

Chadwick Boseman posthumously won Best Actor for his work on Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, which was released after his passing in August 2020. His widow, Taylor Simone Ledward, tearfully accepted the award on his behalf.

“He would say something beautiful, something inspiring, something that would amplify that little voice inside of all of us that tells you can, that tells you to keep going, that calls you back to what you are meant to be doing in this moment in history,” she said, in part, during the emotional speech.

But what’s a live broadcast without some gaffs? Kevin Hart got majorly roasted by Don Cheadle, Nicholas Hoult, Eugene Levy, Jason Sudeikis and Ramy Youssef for mispronouncing Soul when announcing the winner for Best Original Score – Motion Picture. Then, when Jason started going into Leo Tolstoy’s writing during his speech, his fellow nominee, Don, jokingly gestured for him to wrap it up.

To celebrate the doctors and frontline workers, they joined some of the evening’s stars for a hilarious sketch one of the evening’s lighthearted moments. Showing off their comedic chops, they held their own when stars called their doctors to describe symptoms of “illnesses” named after TV shows and movies.

It was a memorable evening filled with emotional and impactful acceptance speeches, surprise wins and, yes, also lots of quirky fun.
