Anne Hathaway’s journey to sobriety marks a significant milestone, one she proudly shared in a recent interview. The 41-year-old Oscar-winning actress revealed that she has been sober for over five years, a decision she made following the birth of her first son, Jonathan.

In a candid conversation with The New York Times, Hathaway reflected on reaching the age of 40 and the perception of being labeled “middle age.” While she acknowledged the significance of the milestone, she expressed hesitation about defining it as such, emphasizing the unpredictable nature of life. “There are so many other things I identify as milestones. I don’t normally talk about it, but I am over five years sober,” she revealed.

“That feels like a milestone to me. Forty feels like a gift.”

Hathaway’s decision to embrace sobriety stemmed from a desire to prioritize her well-being and her role as a mother. During an appearance on Ellen in January 2019, she candidly discussed her choice to abstain from alcohol until her son reaches adulthood.

“I’m gonna stop drinking while my son’s living in my house,” she declared. “I don’t totally love the way I [drink] and he’s getting to an age where he really does need me all the time in the mornings.” Hathaway recounted a pivotal moment that prompted her decision, recalling a morning when she felt the effects of a hangover while accompanying her son to school. “I did one school run one day where I dropped him off at school, I wasn’t driving, but I was hungover and that was enough for me. I didn’t love that one,” she admitted.

Hathaway’s commitment to sobriety aligns with her dedication to motherhood. Alongside her husband, Adam Shulman, she welcomed their first son, Jonathan, in March 2016, followed by the arrival of their second son, Jack, in November 2019. For Hathaway, sobriety not only enhances her personal well-being but also enables her to be fully present for her children as they navigate life’s milestones.
