Anne Hathaway, the talented actress known for her diverse roles and captivating performances, recently opened up about a challenging moment early in her career. In an interview with V Magazine, Hathaway recalled an audacious audition experience that left her feeling uncomfortable and disheartened.

The incident took place in the early 2000s, a time when unconventional audition practices were still prevalent in the entertainment industry. Despite already securing a role in the movie, Hathaway found herself in a perplexing situation during the casting process for her male co-star.

Reflecting on the experience, Hathaway expressed her dismay at the outdated practice of testing chemistry through on-screen intimacy. “Back in the 2000s—and this did happen to me—it was considered normal to ask an actor to make out with other actors to test for chemistry. Which is actually the worst way to do it,” she revealed candidly.

In Hathaway’s case, she was informed that ten actors would be auditioning for the role of her on-screen partner, and she would be required to engage in kissing scenes with each of them. Despite her discomfort, Hathaway felt pressured to comply with the demands of the audition process.

“I was told, ‘We have ten guys coming today and you’re cast. Aren’t you excited to make out with all of them?’ And I thought, ‘Is there something wrong with me?’ because I wasn’t excited. I thought it sounded gross,” she recounted.

As a young actress navigating the complexities of Hollywood, Hathaway grappled with the fear of being perceived as difficult or uncooperative. In an industry where reputation can make or break a career, she felt compelled to conceal her true feelings and forge ahead with the audition.

“I was so young and terribly aware how easy it was to lose everything by being labeled ‘difficult,’ so I just pretended I was excited and got on with it. It wasn’t a power play, no one was trying to be awful or hurt me. It was just a very different time and now we know better,” she admitted, reflecting on the internal conflict she faced.

Despite the discomfort she endured, Hathaway’s revelation sheds light on the progress that has been made in the entertainment industry regarding respectful and ethical casting practices. As awareness grows and standards evolve, actors like Hathaway are empowered to speak out against outdated norms and advocate for a more inclusive and respectful environment for all.
