In order to help stop the spread of the coronavirus, a.k.a. COVID-19, social distancing becomes more important than ever. People are being asked to stay home – concerts and events have been cancelled/postponed, congregation of groups are discouraged, and many schools and non-essential businesses – bars, gyms, resorts, retail stores, and more – have temporarily shut down.

Unfortunately, schools closing may mean that many children who rely on school-provided meals might have to go hungry; businesses closing may also mean some employees could lose their source of income. Meanwhile, the high demand for medical supplies like alcohol, disinfectants, masks, and other Personal Protection Equipment (PPEs) have caused shortages that are greatly impacting the healthcare workers in the front lines.

CELEBRITIES GIVE BACK

Several celebs are doing their part to (1) help those in need to have access to basic necessities such as food, disinfectants, PPEs and more; (2) help bring awareness to the disease; (3) share words of support and encouragement fans around the world to practice social distancing; and (4) provide entertainment online to boost everyone’s morale.

MAKING DONATIONS:

Rihanna‘s Clara Lionel Foundation announced on Saturday that it donated $5 million to the COVID-19 rapid response efforts in the United States and across the globe.

“CLF is supporting on-the-ground partners working on the frontlines of disaster response especially those focused on protecting and serving marginalized communities – helping the most vulnerable in the United States, the Caribbean and in Africa prepare for what is to come,” a statement read. “Over the past five years CLF has been one of the first organizations to respond to some of the world’s most devastating natural disasters, and they have seen firsthand the profound and unintended consequences of not being prepared.”

They’ve partnered with organizations such as Partners In Health,  Direct Relief, Feeding America, the World Health Organization’s COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund, and the International Rescue Committee to help support local food banks serving at-risk communities and the elderly in the United States, acceleration of testing and care in countries like Haiti and Malawi, mobilization of resources and additional capacity and support for Native communities, fund protective equipment for frontline health workers and diagnostic labs, establishment and maintenance of intensive care units, and acceleration of the development of vaccines and other therapies across the globe and more.

“I think we can all agree, Covid-19 is an a—hole,” Ryan wrote on Twitter.

“Covid-19 has brutally impacted older adults and low income families,” he said in the statement posted. “Blake and I are donating $1 million to be split between FEEDING AMERICA and FOOD BANKS CANADA. If you can give, these orgs need our help.”

“Take care of your bodies and hearts,” he continued. “Leave room for joy. Call someone who’s isolated and might need connection. (Hugh Jackman’s # is 1-555-😢-HUGH.)”

Vanessa Hudgens has also made a donation to Feeding America, and shared a screenshot on her page. She also urged her followers to join her in helping.

“It’s a crazy time out there in the world. School closures, job disruptions, lack of paid sick leave and the coronavirus’ disproportionate impact on adults age 60 and older and low-income families are all contributing to the demands placed on food banks across the country. Join me in supporting @feedingamerica today. Let’s help each other out rather than freaking the f–k out. Kk?” she wrote on Instagram.

Following Governor Andrew Cuomo’s Executive Order putting “New York State on Pause,” another husband and wife team are also giving back – Mark Consuelos and Kelly Ripa. Entertainment Tonight reports that the couple donated $1 million to the New York Governor’s office for coronavirus relief efforts. The contribution will reportedly go towards the purchase of urgently needed ventilators. In addition, some of the funds are being allocated to WIN, an organization that runs 11 women’s shelters in NYC.

Notable names in the fashion industry are also stepping up to help NYC.

Project Runway star Christian Siriano and Next in Fashion’s Ashton Michael have volunteered to manufacture masks to supplement the supply of masks for healthcare workers on the frontlines in New York City.

“If @NYGovCuomo says we need masks my team will help make some. I have a full sewing team still on staff working from home that can help,” Christian tweeted.

😷ASSIST HOW YOU CAN 😷 . ASHTON MICHAEL is focusing on those who need assistance the most. While we should all be following the polices of quarantine and isolation , aiding in preventing this spread is a concern for us. We are taking the utmost precautions and focusing on the elderly community and organizations and communities in need,” Ashton shared on Instagram.

YOU CAN, TOO:

Businesses interested in setting up new operations for making masks should contact Empire State Development at 212-803-3100.

RAISING AWARENESS:

Kevin Bacon recently went on social media to kick off the #IStayHomeFor Challenge to let people know that the coronavirus crisis is bigger than our social lives and boredom at being cooped up at home – our actions affect others.

“I’m technically only six degrees away from you,” the actor said in his video. “Everyone of us has someone worth staying home for and I am staying home for [my wife] Kyra Sedgwick,” he continued, holding up a board with “#IStayHomeFor Kyra Sedgewick” written on it.

He then announced the new challenge – share who you’re staying home for and tag six other people to do the same. “We can work together to stay home and keep each other safe and spread the word,” he concluded.

“Hey everybody, it’s now so important to stay home and keep our distance from others if you are able. It’s one way we can help prevent the spread of #Coronavirus and save lives. The more of us who can, make it safer for those who can’t. So if you’re home too like me, post a video or photo with a sign like mine, telling who you are staying home for and ask 6 friends to do the same,” he wrote on Instagram, adding “the more folks involved, the merrier.”

Several celebrities such as David Beckham, Demi Lovato, Millie Bobby Brown, Elle Fanning, Eva Longoria, Elton John and more have since joined in.

While many celebrities are urging everyone to stay home, there are unfortunately some who still bemoan at having to stay home or choose their “freedoms” over their (and others’) health. Well, Sophie Turner is so not here for it and went on Instagram Story to call them out.

“Stay inside, don’t be f–king stupid,” she said in her video. “Even if you count your ‘freedom’ over your health. I don’t give a f–k about your freedom, you could be infecting other people, other vulnerable people around you. So stay inside guys. It’s not cool, and it’s not clever. And that’s the tea,”

“Stay inside. Please. Whether you feel sick or not, stay inside… we have the power to slow this down,” she continued, in part. “So please, please isolate yourself. Stay clean. Stay informed. “Sorry to say that I, today, have tested positive for COVID19, Corona virus,” Kristofer captioned a photo of him and his wife, Gry Molvær Hivju on Instagram. “My familiy and I are self-isolating at home for as long as it takes. We are in good health – I only have mild symptoms of a cold. There are people at higher risk for who this virus might be a devastating diagnosis, so I urge all of you to be extremely careful; wash your hands, keep 1,5 meters distance from others, go in quarantine; just do everything you can to stop the virus from spreading.”

At the time, I had no idea I was even infected. I was careless and make no excuse.”

I will do whatever I can to support using my experience as a way to educate others and prevent the spread of this virus,” he continued. “I am under great care and will fully recover. “Thanks to everyone who has been reaching out since hearing the news about my positive test,” he wrote on Instagram.

“We are all learning more about the seriousness of this situation and hopefully people can continue to educate themselves and realize that they need to behave responsibly both for their own health and for the well being of those around them,” he explained. “I appreciate the authorities in Oklahoma who were helpful with the testing process and everyone from the @utahjazz who have been so supportive. Tom Hanks & Rita Wilson

Tom Hanks has revealed he and wife, Rita Wilson, have tested positive for the Coronavirus.

The couple, who are in Australia as Tom works on pre-production for Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming Elvis Presley biopic, announced the news on Instagram on Wednesday (March 11).

“Hello, folks. Rita and I are down here in Australia. We felt a bit tired, like we had colds, and some body aches,” Tom began. “Rita had some chills that came and went. Slight fevers too. To play things right, as is needed in the world right now, we were tested for the Coronavirus, and were found to be positive.”

“Well, now. What to do next? The Medical Officials have protocols that must be followed,” he continued. “We Hanks’ will be tested, observed, and isolated for as long as public health and safety requires. Not much more to it than a one-day-at-a-time approach, no? We’ll keep the world posted and updated. Take care of yourselves! Hanx!”

Five days since being admitted in a Queensland hospital, their son Chet gave an update on his parents’ condition – they’re out of the hospital and are self-quarantining in a house in Australia.

“Quick update on my folks — they’re out of the hospital, they’re still self-quarantined obviously, but they’re feeling a lot better. So that’s a relief,” he shared in an Instagram video. “I just want to say to anyone out there who has loved ones, or if you yourself are afflicted with the virus, my prayers go out to you, because a lot of people are suffering other than my parents right now.”

“I just wish everyone a safe and speedy recovery, and I think the most important thing is we just stay calm,” he continued, and reminded people to not hoard supplies, “I think if we all are just a little less selfish and more selfless, we’re going to be completely fine.”

Two weeks since their symptoms first started showing, Tom shared another update on Facebook.

“Hey, folks. Two weeks after our first symptoms and we (Rita Wilson) feel better. Sheltering in place works like this: You don’t give it to anyone – You don’t get it from anyone. Common sense, no? Going to take awhile, but if we take care of each other, help where we can, and give up some comforts…this, too, shall pass. We can figure this out. Hanx,” Tom posted.

BOOSTING MORALE:

All love to you, from me and my dear friends. #WeAreOne”

Some, like Hailey Bieber, are making TikTok videos – and she got a little help from hubby Justin Bieber.

The Biebers, who appear to be home, regaled fans with their dance moves while in their PJs (Hailey) and sweats (Justin).

Jojo, also went on TikTok to share a Coronavirus-inspired revamp of her 2004 hit, “Leave (Get out),” with lyrics like: “I never thought that corona could be such a nasty b—ch/Now that she’s here, boy, all I want is for you to use common sense!/ Stay in! Right now! Do it for humanity/I’m deadass about that, but we will survive.”

Beyoncé’s Beyhive had a #HOMEComing watch party to watch her Netflix documentary Homecoming on Wednesday (March 18) at 6 p.m. PT / 9 p.m. ET.

Celebrities are also urging their followers to take new social distancing regulations seriously.

Lady Gaga went on Instagram to talk about the importance of staying home and staying in self-quarantine.

“So I talked to some doctors and scientists. It’s not the easiest for everyone right now but the kindest/healthiest thing we can do is self-quarantine and not hang out with people over 65 and in large groups. I wish I could see my parents and grandmas right now but it’s much safer to not so I don’t get them sick in case I have it,” she wrote. “I’m hanging at home with my dogs. I love you world, we’ll all get through this. Trust me, I talked to God —she said we’re gonna be ok.”

The next day, she shared another message, reminding everyone to be considerate and compassionate in light of the growing concerns over the Coronavirus.

“This is reminding I think a lot of us what it is to both feel like and be a human being. I think it’s so important to acknowledge that we are and must be a global kind singular community,” she wrote. “We can’t do this without kindness. And corona virus is not prejudiced.”

Taylor Swift also went on Instagram Story with a message about making social sacrifices for the time being.

“I follow you online and I love you guys so much and I need to express my concern that things aren’t being taken seriously enough right now. I’m seeing a lot of get togethers and hangs and parties still happening,” Taylor wrote. “This is the time to cancel plans, actually truly isolate as much as you can, and don’t assume that because you don’t feel sick that you aren’t possibly passing something on to someone elderly or vulnerable to this. It’s a really scary time but we need to make social sacrifices right now.”

Miley Cyrus asked fans to also consider the health and well-being of others.

“Be thoughtful. Respectful. Compassionate. HUMAN. while preparing for social distancing…. NO ONE needs every soup in the store, The more we hoard the more expensive and sparse necessities will become, leaving many without essentials. This is a great time to practice restraint…” she tweeted, adding, “It’s incredibly difficult to make smart decisions while panicking, but think twice before following the fear and being inconsiderate. There is enough to go around if we take care of one another. This is a beautiful time to LEAD!”

Ariana Grande is urging people to “care more about others.”

“I keep hearing from a surprising amount of people statements like ‘this isn’t a big deal’ / ‘we’ll be fine’… ‘we still have to go about our lives’ and it’s really blowing my mind,” Ari wrote. “I understand if that is how u felt weeks ago. but please read about what’s going on. please don’t turn a blind eye.”

“It is incredibly dangerous and selfish to take this situation that lightly,” she continued. “The ‘we will be find because we’re young’ mindset is putting people who aren’t young and / or healthy in a lot of danger. you sound stupid and privileged and you need to care more about others. like now.”

The Biebers have also shared messages on Instagram encouraging fans to stay indoors to keep themselves and loved ones protected.

“Obviously this is a really scary time,” Justin wrote. “I wanted to remind everyone what we can do when we come together!! LETS COME TOGETHER BY ISOLATING OURSELVES UNTIL WE HAVE MORE ANSWERS! Our grandparents are counting on us.”

Hailey also shared photos from a trip she and Justin went on recently, writing, “quarantining 🙆🏼‍♀️ but reminiscing on this beautiful trip.. reminding me to never take these experiences for granted and how grateful I am for such amazing memories. sending everyone love and good energy!!”

New mom Ashley Graham shined the light on the economic impacts of staying home, encouraging everyone to do our part to stop the spread of the virus, and keep positive, writing:

“The times we are in feel surreal and have put everything into perspective. I’m using this time to appreciate the family time I get to enjoy with Justin and Issac. But we have to acknowledge that it’s a big adjustment to stay inside all day, so remember to also check in and take care of your mental health. Though the times are tough I choose to hold on to comfort given in the eternal command, “Fear not.” I have faith for the now and faith for the future. As we know faith without the necessary work behind it doesn’t mean much.

I believe it’s important for us to remain positive, level-headed, calm, and to continue to support each other. It’s also important to take this seriously; if your job allows, socially distance yourself. Even if you’re young and healthy it’s up to all of us to do our part and protect others, especially the elderly and immunocompromised.

I also want to shine a light on those who don’t have the option of staying home from work, those who are missing vital pay checks, and the children who are missing out on free or reduced lunches they depend on at school. Thank you to the healthcare workers who are working tirelessly and risking their own health to protect us all. We’re all in this together, so in the spirit of “love thy neighbor” let’s lead with love and kindness ❤️

“Besides hand sanitizers, avoiding crowds, electrolytes, Tylenol, gassing up, etc… THIS is my #Coronavirus weapon. I’m relishing my true blessings. My real legacy. This time is a reminder that all we have is NOW. Imagine the 46 million or more people in this country who live on or below the poverty line. Think of those who can’t drive or walk or who don’t have a loved one who has their back. Praying for EVERYONE’s health but also hoping this is a wake up call to realize what has true value
