Dua Lipa Opens Up About The Effects OF Being Meme’d

Dua Lipa has been crushing it in the music scene – and she’s out to challenge herself even more.

in a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Dua opened up about an instance when her confidence was knocked down – a criticism about her performance went viral and even became a meme. But instead of letting it bring her down, she turned that criticism into powerful motivation.

Here’s the backstory: Back in 2018, Dua performed her hit “No Rule” at the 2018 BRIT Awards. Under the video, which was shared on social media, one person wrote, “I love her lack of energy, go girl give us nothing!” The original comment has since been deleted, but had already gone viral – and it deeply affected Dua.

“It’s one thing when people are mean about you, but you know that you did your best. But it’s another thing when people are mean about you and you know that you actually haven’t had the opportunity to be the best because you’ve spread yourself so thinly in trying to do everything at once,” Dua told the magazine.

“You want to show that you’re here to stay and you want to show that it’s not just about one album or one big song or whatever it is,” she continued.

Although she took the comment personally, it only pushed her to work harder. “I just wanted to make sure that this time around, I was very much in control of the fact that I’m going to do the music, then I’m going to rehearse. And then when I come in and I do the performances, they’re all going to be amazing. I’m going to prove to people that I can do this and that I’m here to stay.”

Dua has since heated up stages with amazing performances – including the GRAMMYs, the American Music Awards, the MTV EMAs, and this year’s BRIT Awards.

In June, she shared a similar message to fans while celebrating the 4th anniversary of her debut album.

“I’m so grateful for all the incredible opportunities, all the amazing people I met, all the incredible lessons that I learned, touring for like three years,” she began in an Instagram Story video. “Getting bullied online…made me want to dance my a– off and just really get better.”

“So thank you so much, for all things good and bad, for helping me grow. I’m forever grateful,” she continued. “And I’m excited for you guys to see what we’ve got coming up next.”

Dua’s set to kick off her tour in September, after a year’s delay – and she’s excited to perform live for her fans.

“The year delay to my tour makes it even more exciting. I’m really looking forward to performing live with a live audience,” Dua said during an interview on Radio DeeJay Summer Camp.

“I am also grateful today as I feel I can add new dimensions to my performances and tour,” she added. It’s like it all happens a year late, which is even more exciting.”
