We finally know why Harry Styles chose not to take on the role of Prince Eric in The Little Mermaid.

Back in 2019, reports came out that Harry had turned down the role in the live action remake of the beloved Disney film, which will be released in theaters in May.

Jonah Hauer-King plays Prince Eric in the highly-anticipated film.

Now, director Rob Marshall is shedding light on what happened. He confirmed that he did speak to Harry about the role — and also revealed why Harry ultimately passed on it.

Speaking to EW, Rob said that at the time, Harry “really felt like he wanted to go off and do the movies that he ended up doing, which were sort of darker.”

Harry would then go on to star in films like Don’t Worry Darling and My Policeman.

Harry actually also spoke about the opportunity back in 2019 in his The Face cover story, saying:

“I want to put music out and focus on that for a while. But everyone involved in it was amazing, so I think it’s going to be great. I’ll enjoy watching it, I’m sure.”
