Country music star Kelsea Ballerini recently shared some heartbreaking news about her beloved dog, Dibs, with her fans. The 30-year-old singer, who is currently promoting her upcoming album PATTERNS, took to social media on Wednesday (August 29) to reveal the sad and emotional update that has been weighing heavily on her heart.
As excitement builds around her new album, Kelsea found it difficult to focus solely on the project without acknowledging the personal struggle she’s currently facing. In an emotional Instagram story, Kelsea opened up about Dibs, her loyal companion of nine years, and the devastating news of his recent diagnosis.
“I feel pretty disingenuous promoting this album and tracklist reveal (which I am so, so proud of) without updating you on my sweet Dibs’ health,” Kelsea began. She went on to explain that Dibs had been diagnosed with inoperable cancer in his heart, a heartbreaking reality that no pet owner ever wants to face.
“The last few days we have discovered that Dibby has inoperable cancer in his heart,” she continued, sharing the difficult details of the diagnosis. “He’s not in pain, and luckily it hasn’t spread further. We’re going to start him on the ‘big’ meds to try to make sure he can have as many comfortable and happy days (weeks, months) left as possible.” Kelsea’s words convey a deep sense of love and responsibility for Dibs, as she and her loved ones are determined to make his remaining time as joyful and comfortable as possible.
Throughout the update, Kelsea expressed her gratitude for the support she’s received from those closest to her during this challenging time. “The doctors have been amazing, my mom is here (he stans grandma), and Chase is the greatest dog dad in the world,” she wrote, acknowledging the strength and comfort her family has provided. “He is getting extra cuddles and kibbles from his little family,” Kelsea added, painting a picture of a household united in love and care for their cherished pet.
Kelsea’s emotional message continued, reflecting on the deep bond she shares with Dibs. “It’s a complex and emotional time,” she admitted, highlighting the overwhelming mix of feelings that come with caring for a beloved pet during their final days. “He’s been my baby and my steady for the last 9 years and very much alongside this whole journey with us all.”
