Miley Cyrus has been in the public eye ever since she was a young child, acting and singing and performing in front of the camera for all the world to see. As she’s grown older, she’s constantly changed and evolved and pushed boundaries, in her acting, her style choices, and her music.

And of course, those who have been watching her for years have been privy to those changes and have taken notice and even appreciated them. However, there have been some who have openly criticized her for things that have changed — particularly her voice and how she now sings in a deeper, lower register compared to before.

In a new interview for Interview magazine with Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich, Miley opened up about how she felt more free to experiment with her music during the pandemic because she was recording at home and not in a studio where professionals have time and time again criticized how her voice now sounds when she sings.

The 28-year-old star shared:

“I even went down to some of those octaves, because singing those super-low lead vocals is so satisfying. My whole life, whether in vocal training or just continuing to hone my craft, it’s always been about, ‘Why do you sound like a man?

Where’s your f***ing falsetto, b****? Why can’t you sing the high octave of ‘Party in the U.S.A. anymore?”

She went on to talk about how her voice is a representation of who she truly is:

“My voice is how I represent myself. It’s how I express myself. I’ve worked with so many people who tell me, ‘We’re going to have to bring in a singer to hit those high parts.’

You know, ‘falsetto’ is this Latin term for when a boy goes through puberty, but they still want him to sing in the choir. It means false.”

Miley wants us all to know, however, that she does not have a “false voice” and that her sound is authentic to who she is. She stated:

“I am who I am. I say what I mean in the moment, even if that changes tomorrow.”

You do you, Miley. And you sound phenomenal!
