In a candid and unexpected tell-all, Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has broken his silence regarding the dissolution of his high-profile engagement to Emmy-nominated actress Shailene Woodley. Appearing on the Not Just Football podcast on Thursday, September 10, the 42-year-old NFL veteran leveled serious claims against his ex-fiancée, alleging that Woodley asked to pursue intimacy with another man mere days after accepting his marriage proposal.
Rodgers and the 34-year-old Big Little Lies star quietly initiated their romance during the early months of 2020, fast-tracking their commitment to an engagement by December of that same year. After officially confirming their relationship in early 2021, the pair experienced a series of public separations and brief reconciliations before permanently calling it quits in 2022. Addressing the timeline of their split for the first time on-record, Rodgers revisited the weeks immediately following his proposal.
“I date Shailene, I propose and she says yes,” Rodgers recalled during the interview. “She maybe felt like she was forced to make a decision, she could have said no. But not a couple of days after that, she tells me before we get married like, ‘I got to go f–k this guy.’ ”
The Super Bowl-winning quarterback pushed back strongly against long-standing public perceptions regarding how their romance ended, directly addressing narratives that framed him as the sole instigator of the breakup.
“‘Cause her story is, I ruined her life and gave her crazy depression because I left her, but in actuality she told me that and took off the ring by March,” he continued. “I proposed in December, took off the ring by March, and we had a couple of times when we tried to get reunited and nothing ever happened, and there wasn’t even a relationship in ’22 to break off. She literally told me I don’t want to be with you.”
Explaining his decision to address the situation publicly after years of media speculation, Rodgers noted that he felt compelled to clear the air regarding how their private dynamics were spun across the press.
“There’s just a lot of narratives out there that are just not true and they portray things a certain way because they can get away with it,” Rodgers stated. “No one knows what they’re doing.” Reflecting more broadly on his past romantic relationships with famous figures, he added, “The height of their fame was when they were with me.”
Woodley has historically maintained a guarded posture regarding her time with Rodgers. However, during a 2024 retrospective interview, she briefly reflected on the chapter, thoughtfully noting that while their time together “was not right. But it was beautiful.” As of press time, representatives for Woodley have not issued a response to Rodgers’ latest podcast statements.
