Vivienne Jolie-Pitt is taking the next formal step in redefining her public identity.
Just weeks after celebrating her 18th birthday, the daughter of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt has officially filed paperwork requesting a legal name change, seeking to remove “Pitt” from her surname. If the petition is approved, she will be legally known as Vivienne Marcheline Jolie, aligning her legal name with the one she has already been using professionally.
According to court documents filed with the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Vivienne submitted the petition to change her name from Vivienne Marcheline Jolie-Pitt to Vivienne Marcheline Jolie. The filing lists the reason for the request simply as “personal,” with a hearing scheduled for November 2.
While neither Vivienne nor her family has publicly commented on the filing, the move follows a pattern that has emerged among several of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s children in recent years.
For many fans, the decision isn’t entirely unexpected.
Vivienne quietly began using the surname Jolie professionally in 2024 while serving as a producer on the Tony Award-winning Broadway production of The Outsiders. In the musical’s official Playbill, she was credited simply as Vivienne Jolie, marking the first public indication that she had already chosen to distance her professional identity from her father’s surname.
Now, she’s taking that decision one step further by making it official through the courts.
Her filing also comes shortly after another member of the Jolie-Pitt family began a similar legal process.
Earlier this month, Vivienne’s older sister Zahara, 21, completed a required legal step toward formally changing her own surname. Her hearing is currently scheduled for September.
Their older brother Maddox, now 24, also reportedly filed legal paperwork earlier this year after previously dropping “Pitt” from his professional credits while working as an assistant director on Angelina Jolie’s film Couture.
Meanwhile, sister Shiloh, who has increasingly established herself within the dance community, has already completed the process.
After being granted a legal name change in 2024, she officially became Shiloh Jolie. Within the dance world, she’s also been using the shortened name “Shi,” reflecting another personal evolution as she continues to pursue her own creative interests.
Taken together, the recent filings represent a significant shift for the famous family.
Of Angelina and Brad’s six children, only Pax and Vivienne’s twin brother Knox have not legally removed Pitt from their surnames. According to recent reports, Pax remains the only sibling who continues to maintain any meaningful contact with Brad Pitt’s extended family.
The legal filings arrive years after Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt finalized one of Hollywood’s most closely followed divorces.
Since separating in 2016, the former couple have spent years navigating highly public legal proceedings involving custody, finances and their French winery, Château Miraval. Throughout much of that time, their children have largely remained out of the spotlight, with only occasional public appearances alongside either parent.
Vivienne herself has generally maintained a notably low profile despite growing up in one of Hollywood’s most recognizable families.
Her work on The Outsiders offered fans a rare glimpse into her interests behind the scenes.
