Anne Hathaway is stepping into a completely new creative lane — and it sounds darker, moodier, and far more mysterious than fans might expect.
The Oscar-winning actress has released a song titled “Burial,” the first track from the upcoming soundtrack for the psychological thriller Mother Mary.
The project marks a major shift for Hathaway, who takes on the role of an enigmatic pop star within the film — a character named Mother Mary whose artistic persona appears to blur the lines between fame, performance, and identity.
“Burial” arrived on March 5 and offers the first glimpse of the musical world surrounding the film.
The track was co-written by Hathaway alongside an impressive lineup of collaborators: Jack Antonoff, Charli xcx, and George Daniel. The song will appear on the forthcoming Mother Mary: Greatest Hits soundtrack album, scheduled to be released April 17.
Additional music on the album will feature contributions from FKA twigs, who also stars in the film.
Directed by David Lowery, Mother Mary is described as a psychosexual pop opera, blending music, psychological drama, and surreal storytelling.
The film centers on Hathaway’s character — a legendary pop star whose carefully constructed world begins to unravel when she reconnects with someone from her past.
The official synopsis reads:
“Long-buried wounds rise to the surface when iconic pop star Mother Mary (Hathaway) reunites with her estranged best friend and former costume designer Sam Anselm (Coel) on the eve of her comeback performance.”
That friend, Sam Anselm, is played by Michaela Coel.
The film also features an ensemble cast including Hunter Schafer, FKA twigs, Kaia Gerber, Jessica Brown Findlay, Alba Baptista, Atheena Frizzell, Isaura Barbé-Brown, and Sian Clifford.
