Country breakout star Ella Langley is speaking with rare honesty about the emotional toll of overnight stardom.
During a recent concert stop in Columbus, Ohio, the 27-year-old “Choosin’ Texas” singer paused her performance to address the heavy public scrutiny that has accompanied her rapid rise over the past year, reflecting on how intense online commentary made her question her own resilience.
“I don’t think I’ve ever had more opinions on myself in my life than I have in this last year. The way I look, the way I speak, the way I dress, the way I sing, the way I write,” Langley told the audience, as captured in fan video footage posted to TikTok.
Langley confessed to the crowd that the constant wave of criticism initially shook her confidence as an artist and as a person.
“At first it bothered me, I won’t even lie,” she admitted. “I signed up to sing music and I love to do what I do, but if this is what it’s going to be like the whole time then shit, I don’t know if I’m fucking strong enough for this, Lord, I don’t know.”
However, Langley shared that her perspective shifted after grounding herself in her journey—remembering the years of grinding through small venues and sleeping in tour vans before her radio breakthrough.
“That’s the girl that rode in the 15-passenger van night after night after night,” Langley said of her earlier self. “She rode in a Honda Accord night after night after night, chasing her dream, living on bar food, living on tip jar money.”
She concluded her speech with a proud declaration of self-acceptance: “So I’m going to tell you right now, I am proud of that girl that everybody seems to be picking on a little bit.”
The candid moment comes amidst a monumental record-breaking stretch in Langley’s music career. Her smash hit single “Choosin’ Texas” recently made chart history by spending 23 non-consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the longest-running No. 1 single in the chart’s history.
