One month following the tragic passing of Hayden Panettiere, approximately 150 of the late actress’s closest friends, family, and former colleagues gathered in Malibu, California, on Saturday for an intimate oceanfront celebration of life.
The service, held at a coastal church, featured a poignant tribute to the Heroes and Nashville star, who died on Aug. 16 at the age of 36. Given Panettiere’s lifelong love for the ocean and marine life, particularly whales, the seaside setting served as a meaningful backdrop for loved ones saying their final goodbyes. Before the service began, white doves were released into the sky.
Inside, guests were greeted by a portrait of a smiling Panettiere aboard a boat, accompanied by the inscription: “Honoring the life & legacy [of] Hayden Panettiere. 8.21.89 – 8.16.26.”
The star-studded gathering drew notable figures from across the entertainment industry, including Paris Hilton, Ruby Rose, and Evan Ross. Panettiere’s Nashville co-stars turned out in force to honor her memory; Connie Britton and Charles Esten both delivered emotional speeches during the ceremony. Esten also performed one of the country music songs Panettiere made famous on the hit series. Other former castmates in attendance included Lennon Stella and Jonathan Jackson.
The memorial was organized by Panettiere’s father, Skip Panettiere. Notable in their absence were her ex-fiancé, former world champion boxer Wladimir Klitschko, and their 11-year-old daughter, Kaya, neither of whom were photographed at the event.
Tensions surrounding Panettiere’s personal circle remained visible. Reports indicated that her estranged mother, Lesley Vogel, and her on-again, off-again boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, were not invited to the service. While Vogel disputed claims of an explicit ban, citing an unrelated family emergency for her absence, she has remained openly critical of Hickerson.
Panettiere died from an apparent overdose at an Airbnb in Greenville, South Carolina. Both Brian Hickerson and his brother Zach were present at the scene. According to law enforcement reports obtained by Page Six, Zach was visibly distraught as emergency personnel performed life-saving measures, while Brian reportedly did not break down until paramedics officially declared Panettiere dead.
When approached by reporters earlier in the week regarding how he was coping, Hickerson offered a blunt response: “How do you think I’m doing?”
Panettiere and Hickerson’s volatile relationship began in 2018 and was marked by multiple domestic violence arrests—events Panettiere candidly detailed in her May memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning. Sources confirm the pair had reconnected roughly two weeks prior to her death, a factor Vogel claimed contributed to her ongoing estrangement from her daughter.
Panettiere’s death remains under active investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration. While local authorities found no immediate signs of foul play, federal investigators are examining text messages linked to a Los Angeles-based supplier. Preliminary findings suggest Panettiere passed away after consuming a single fentanyl-laced oxycodone pill, though the official coroner’s report remains pending.
