Jennifer Lawrence has never been shy about sharing her mind — except, these days, when it comes to politics.
The Oscar-winning actress, 35, once known for her outspoken criticism of former President Donald Trump, has noticeably gone quiet on political topics in recent years. And according to a new interview with The New York Times, there’s a very deliberate reason why.
“I don’t really know if I should,” Lawrence said when asked whether she wanted to comment on the current political climate. “The first Trump administration was so wild and just, how can we let this stand? I felt like I was running around like a chicken with my head cut off. But as we’ve learned, election after election, celebrities do not make a difference whatsoever on who people vote for.”
She continued, “So then what am I doing? I’m just sharing my opinion on something that’s going to add fuel to a fire that’s ripping the country apart. We are so divided.”
It’s a striking shift from the Jennifer Lawrence of 2016, when she penned a fiery open letter after Trump’s victory and became one of Hollywood’s loudest voices against his policies. She also spoke out against the 2017 travel ban, often urging her millions of fans to vote and stay politically active.
But in today’s climate — one that seems louder and more polarized than ever — Lawrence seems to be stepping back to preserve both her sanity and her sense of purpose. Her latest comments reflect a broader feeling among many public figures who’ve learned the hard way that speaking up doesn’t always change minds; sometimes, it just invites more division.
After years of being in the political spotlight, Lawrence seems to have found peace in letting her work — not her words — speak for her. And if history is any indication, she’ll find a way to make a statement either way.
