So, when Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Gracie Abrams dropped her latest album, Daughter from Hell, it didn’t take long for Swifties to start connecting dots that might not actually be there.
The epicenter of the drama? A hauntingly raw track titled “Death Wish.” Fans quickly flooded social media with theories that the 26-year-old musician was writing about her mentor, friend, and occasional collaborator, Taylor Swift. The song’s scathing imagery certainly pack a lyrical punch, featuring lines that seem targeted at an enigmatic, larger-than-life figure:
“My love, you love your time machine, your power trips and diamond rings / The walls you built on teenage dreams, the well you dug for sinking things / Your words to kill are evergreen, so you must not feel anything at all,” Gracie sings. “But how’d you get so bulletproof? / You trade your time for inside truths / Trade your time for any clue of what to do or not to do / Hate to say, it’s nothing new, aside from those few girls you keep around”
Given the reference to “teenage dreams” and a high-profile inner circle, the internet did what the internet does best: assume the worst. But before rumors of a rift between the two pop powerhouses could take permanent root, producer and collaborator Aaron Dessner stepped in to clear the air.
Speaking with Billboard, Dessner—who co-wrote and co-produced Daughter from Hell with Abrams—swiftly put the speculation to rest regarding the 36-year-old “Actually Romantic” singer.
“Yeah, definitely not,” Aaron asserted. “It was written at a time when [Gracie] was writing about a friend’s ex, being in a bad relationship. So it was kind of about that person, I think. I wouldn’t even actually know who that person was.”
Dessner’s comments align perfectly with what Abrams herself shared over a year ago when she first debuted “Death Wish” live during her The Secret of Us Tour stop in London back in March 2025. Addressing the crowd before playing the track, Abrams laid out the inspiration behind the pen:
“This song is about a friend of mine who recently was dating, like, a mega narcissist,” Gracie said at the time. “A sincere friend of mine was recently dating someone who kind of sucked. And I was listening to them talk about it a lot, and so this song is about that!”
So, rest assured: there’s zero bad blood between Abrams and Swift. In fact, their bond seems stronger than ever. Fans were quick to notice Abrams attending Taylor and Travis Kelce’s star-studded wedding earlier this month—though, naturally, Gracie still managed to raise a few eyebrows when she shared a mysterious photo on Instagram just days after the nuptials. Whether that post hints at new music or just classic post-wedding recovery remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: “Death Wish” is firmly dedicated to an anonymous ex who simply “kind of sucked.”
