The 52-year-old actress, known for her sharp wit on and off camera, went viral this week after sharing a bizarre claim about her daughter’s boyfriend — specifically, that he “laid two eggs.”
Yes. Actual eggs.
Kate appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Monday (November 24), where she opened up about her daughter, 26-year-old Lily Mo Sheen, whom she shares with actor Michael Sheen. But while audiences may have expected a sweet family anecdote, what they got instead was… avian anatomy? Reproductive confusion? Comedy gold? All of the above.
“We’re very close family,” Kate began, before shifting into what may become one of the most iconic late-night moments of the year.
“We’ve had a tough couple of years, both my parents passed away. And literally the only bright spot in the whole time came from him. He laid two eggs in a week is what the bright spot was,” she explained, referring to Lily’s boyfriend — whose identity remains unknown to the public.
Jimmy, understandably baffled, asked, “What does that mean?”
Kate, unbothered and dead-serious, continued: “Well, he said, ‘I’ve laid an egg.’ It came out the route it would come out of a hen.”
And yes, it gets even stranger.
“The first time it happened, he was genuinely scared and he was like, it’s got a full shell, it’s got a yolk…it’s the size of a bird. He crushed it to see what was inside. A yolk was inside, like a hardboiled one too. So it kind of cooked inside him.”
Kate admitted that when she first heard about this alleged egg-laying incident, she assumed he was exaggerating — understandably — but she didn’t have the emotional bandwidth to question it too closely at the time.
“I thought at first, okay this is a little bit embellished,” she said, noting the stress her family was under. “Obviously he can’t be…like this doesn’t happen. Also there was a lot going on in my family, so I kind went, ‘Okay, well, boyfriend’s laid an egg. Whatever.’”
But then, a week later, he allegedly laid another egg. And Kate had receipts. She showed photos of the eggs to Jimmy, who could only respond: “What in the world? Your daughter’s boyfriend is the Easter Bunny, there’s no other explanation.”
Kate, for her part, seems thoroughly charmed by the mystery man.
“It’s my favorite thing he’s ever done… I really like him,” she laughed, adding that she even contacted medical professionals — none of whom could offer a plausible explanation.
