Matty Healy’s mum isn’t holding back her thoughts about his past romance with Taylor Swift.

During an appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Denise Welch — a panelist on the UK show Loose Women — was asked about Taylor’s new album The Tortured Poets Department, which many fans believe includes songs about her short-lived relationship with the 1975 frontman.

And while she tried to play it cool, Welch definitely had a few choice words.

“Obviously, on pain of death can I talk about that episode, but being her mother-in-law is a role that I am glad that I lost,” she said with a laugh.

“Not that I have anything against her at all! It was just — it was tricky,” she added, suggesting there may have been some behind-the-scenes tension during Taylor and Matty’s brief time together.

“She — listen, you’re not allowed to say anything, and then she writes a whole album about it,” Welch continued.

It’s widely believed that several songs on The Tortured Poets Department — including “Guilty as Sin?,” “Fresh Out the Slammer,” “I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can),” and “loml” — reference Taylor’s whirlwind romance with Healy, which played out in the public eye last spring before fizzling out just weeks later.

Welch said that despite the media frenzy, her son took the attention in stride. “Matty has taken it all in completely good grace,” she said.

She also gave a sweet update on Matty’s love life post-Swift. “He’s very happy with his amazing fiancée Gabriella [Bechtel], who is gorgeous,” Welch shared. “So, we’ve moved on.”

Neither Matty nor Taylor has publicly addressed the exact nature of their breakup, but fans have speculated that the tracks on her latest record give a glimpse into the emotional fallout.

As for Welch, it seems she’s not keen on revisiting that chapter any time soon — and is perfectly happy to keep her distance from the Swiftie discourse.
