Appearing on the Tuesday (August 4) episode of Kristin Cavallari’s Let’s Be Honest podcast, the 43-year-old Australian icon opened up about her relationship with her 49-year-old ex-husband, revealing that years of mutual respect have transformed their bond into something deeply familial.
Kerr and the Pirates of the Caribbean star were married from 2010 to 2013 and share a 15-year-old son, Flynn. Reflecting on their co-parenting dynamic, Kerr shared that while ending a marriage involves emotional complexity, maintaining a united front for Flynn was non-negotiable from the moment they parted ways.
“It’s obviously not easy when you’re separating,” Kerr explained during the candid podcast sit-down, “and there’s always a level of hurt even if you both know it’s for the right reasons. So there’s always a level of hurt both ways I would say in any separation.”
To navigate that delicate transition, Kerr noted that both she and Bloom adopted a single guiding principle centered entirely on their son’s emotional stability. “The most important thing that I learnt is just to put the needs of the child first,” she emphasized, adding that she would consistently evaluate decisions by asking, “Is this in the best interest of Flynn?”
“And that was really our guidepost for any decision,” Kerr continued. “Through that, we’ve known each other for a long time, we’ve developed such a good friendship that he’s just part of the family. He’s like a brother, you know? So we have that.”
