A dramatic environmental emergency unfolded along one of Southern California’s most exclusive stretches of coastline when a massive sinkhole opened up directly outside the garage of Nicolas Cage’s oceanfront Malibu residence. The severe terrain collapse caused the academy award-winner’s multi-car driveway to completely cave in, leaving structural engineers, local authorities, and emergency crews scrambling to secure the perimeter.
The 62-year-old screen icon purchased the stunning 4,000-square-foot contemporary estate in 2024 for $10.5 million.Situated directly along the Pacific coastline, the multi-level architectural property boasts floor-to-ceiling glass walls, expansive private terraces, and panoramic ocean vistas. However, the property’s proximity to the water proved vulnerable following a day of intense rainfall across the Los Angeles basin, triggering a severe geological failure early Tuesday morning (September 8).
Emergency responders were initially dispatched to the gated compound at approximately 5:45 a.m. following reports of a suspected gas main break caused by subterranean shifting. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered a massive crater—measuring roughly 30 feet by 30 feet—where the concrete driveway once stood. Local news outlet KTLA reported that severe coastal erosion was the primary catalyst behind the structural collapse. During a live broadcast from the scene, KTLA’s Rich Prickett provided an assessment of the visual destruction:
“Substantial damage done to this home, or at least the driveway to this home here in Malibu.”
Fortunately, no injuries were reported in connection with the collapse. Initial reports from authorities indicate that the four-story house was completely unoccupied when the ground gave way. Addressing the status of the residence, Prickett added:
“It doesn’t appear that anybody was home. As a matter of fact, the house looks like it is under some sort of renovation.”
