The entertainment world is in mourning following the tragic deaths of legendary filmmaker and actor Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Reiner, who were found deceased at their Los Angeles home on Sunday afternoon, December 14. Rob was 78 years old, while Michele was 68.

The devastating news was first reported by TMZ, which initially stated that two individuals were discovered at the residence, though their identities had not yet been confirmed. As details emerged, authorities confirmed the victims were Rob and Michele Reiner. According to TMZ, the couple was found with “lacerations consistent with a knife,” while ABC News later reported that they were “stabbed to death.” The Los Angeles Police Department’s Robbery Homicide Division is actively investigating the case.

The Los Angeles Fire Department reportedly received a medical aid call at approximately 3:30 p.m. PT. When first responders arrived, they discovered a man and woman deceased inside the home. LAPD officers arrived roughly ten minutes later to secure the scene and begin their investigation.

It has been reported that the couple’s daughter, Romy Reiner, was the one who discovered them.

In the wake of the tragedy, the Reiner family released a statement expressing their heartbreak.

“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner. We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time,” the family said in a statement to Variety.

Rob Reiner’s adopted daughter, Tracy Reiner, also shared a brief but emotional statement as she processed the loss.

“I came from the greatest family ever. I don’t know what to say. I’m in shock,” Tracy told NBC News.

She added that she had seen her father just one day earlier at a family gathering, underscoring the suddenness and incomprehensibility of the loss.

As the investigation unfolded, authorities confirmed another deeply distressing development. The LAPD announced that Nick Reiner, the 32-year-old son of Rob and Michele Reiner, had been taken into custody and booked for murder.

“We have our robbery/homicide division handling the investigation. They worked throughout the night on this case and were able to take into custody Nick Reiner, a suspect in this case,” LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell said via CNN.

A subsequent police statement confirmed the charges in stark terms.

“The investigation further revealed that Nick Reiner, the 32-year-old son of Robert and Michele Reiner, was responsible for their deaths. Nick Reiner was located and arrested at approximately 9:15 p.m. He was booked for murder and remains in custody with no bail. On Tuesday, December 16, 2025, the case will be presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for filing consideration,” the statement read, in part.

Earlier reports indicated bail had been set at $4 million, but officials have since confirmed that no bail is currently set.

Rob Reiner leaves behind an extraordinary legacy in film and television. He was one of Hollywood’s most beloved and influential directors, responsible for classics such as When Harry Met Sally, The Princess Bride, Stand By Me, A Few Good Men, and Misery. As an actor, he became a household name through his role on All in the Family, for which he earned an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.

Beyond his accolades, Reiner was widely respected for his storytelling, his advocacy, and his enduring impact on American cinema.

As the investigation continues, fans and colleagues alike are reflecting on Rob and Michele’s lives, their love for family, and the devastating loss felt by those closest to them.
