Selena Gomez has always kept it real with her fans, and her latest social media check-in was no exception. Taking to her Instagram Story on Sunday, October 18, the 34-year-old superstar delivered a candid PSA addressing public comments regarding changes in her singing and speaking voice, pointing directly to a past habit as the primary cause.
Addressing the online commentary head-on, Gomez spoke with characteristic directness:
“I’m not gonna be able to change my voice,” she stated in a video clip shared with her millions of followers. “I vaped nicotine a lot and just so everyone knows that’s somewhat vaped, nicotine is so hard to quit. I just wanted to say, if you’re going through it or if you’re even trying to vape, it’s just not worth it.”
The multi-hyphenate star didn’t hold back on the regret she feels over picking up the habit in the first place, offering a pragmatic response to critics:
“It’s so stupid, and it’s changed my voice. If you guys don’t like listening to my voice, that’s totally understandable, I don’t mind. Just don’t listen to it. Just don’t listen.”
Gomez then shared that she has successfully kicked the habit and remains focused on staying smoke-free despite the challenges of addiction:
“But, I am really excited because I stopped and I just hope I can keep it up. It’s really hard, but know if you are going through something, you can get through it too. It sucks.”
Gomez’s frank honesty comes during a busy period in her career. She is gearing up to return to the screen for the sixth season of Hulu’s hit comedy Only Murders in the Building alongside co-stars Martin Short and Steve Martin, with the new season relocating the trio to London for an international mystery. Additionally, she is set to lend her voice to the upcoming animated feature film Not Alone opposite Timothée Chalamet, playing Fran, a brilliant astro-botanist who develops the world’s first plant-fueled rocket.
By speaking openly about her struggles with vaping, Gomez continues to use her massive platform to foster transparent, relatable conversations around health, wellness, and self-acceptance.
