Sophie Turner is stepping into one of the most iconic roles in pop culture history. The 29-year-old actress, best known for her breakout as Sansa Stark on Game of Thrones, has officially been confirmed as the new Lara Croft in Prime Video’s upcoming Tomb Raider adaptation.
The series, based on the legendary video game franchise, will be led by Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who is serving as the writer, showrunner, and executive producer.
In a statement, Sophie expressed her excitement and acknowledged the legacy of Lara Croft’s past portrayals. “I am thrilled beyond measure, to be playing Lara Croft. She’s such an iconic character, who means so much to so many – and I am giving everything I’ve got,” she said.
She continued by honoring the actresses who came before her. “They’re massive shoes to fill, following in the steps of Angelina [Jolie] and Alicia [Vikander] with their powerhouse performances, but with Phoebe at the helm, we (and Lara) are all in very safe hands. I can’t wait for you all to see what we have cooking.”
According to Variety, production is set to begin in January 2026, giving fans plenty of time to speculate about the tone, style, and action-packed sequences the series will deliver.
The casting marks a major milestone in Turner’s career. While she’s previously starred in blockbusters like X-Men: Dark Phoenix, this role positions her at the forefront of one of gaming’s most beloved franchises.
