Taylor Swift surprised Studio 8H viewers on Saturday night, October 3, making an unannounced guest appearance during host Dakota Johnson’s opening monologue on Saturday Night Live.
Johnson opened the show poking fun at her public dating history with musicians, joking that while most concertgoers leave a venue with t-shirt merchandise, she usually leaves with a relationship. The Fifty Shades actress then credited her inner circle of friends for offering non-judgmental support through her romantic ups and downs—prompting Swift to step out from backstage to thunderous applause.
As the crowd cheered, Johnson introduced the 36-year-old “Patient Zero” singer as “my literal therapist.”
Swift quickly set the record straight with witty timing: “I’m not your therapist, actually. You just show up once a week at my house with an empty bottle of wine and ask if I want some.”
“Yeah, well I have manners,” Johnson deadpanned.
Swift continued: “And then you plop on my couch and overshare, and every so often, I just say, ‘Damn, that’s crazy.’”
“Is that not a therapist?” Johnson asked.
“And then I go, ‘Well, you know, oh it’s getting late, I should probably go to bed,’ and then you say…” Swift teased, with Johnson chiming in, “Sleepover, yay!”
“Then I give you a Pedialyte and my security drives you home,” Swift added, wrapping up the banter before stepping aside.
Johnson kept the monologue rolling with tongue-in-cheek jokes about her career and personal life, noting that Madame Web has still not turned a profit, joking about breaking up with two musicians since her last hosting stint, and referencing making out with co-star Anne Hathaway for their upcoming film Verity. “Now she’s pregnant, you do the math,” Johnson joked.
The duo’s late-night TV moment follows their recent high-profile creative collaboration. Johnson stars alongside Colin Farrell in the music video for Swift’s new single “Patient Zero,” which premiered during the MTV Video Music Awards, where Johnson made a surprise appearance to present Swift with the inaugural Artist Director Honors award.
