Taylor Swift is poised to make history once again on the MTV Video Music Awards stage.
The 36-year-old global pop titan will be honored with the inaugural MTV VMA Artist Director Honors during the live broadcast on Sunday, September 27, in Los Angeles. The newly established distinction was created by MTV to recognize recording artists whose vision behind the camera has expanded the scope of visual media and transformed modern music video storytelling.
Beyond adding another marquee title to her resume, the career milestone will officially cement Swift as the most decorated artist in MTV VMA history. Heading into the weekend tied with Beyoncé at 30 moonperson trophies apiece, the non-competitive directorial honor will elevate Swift to an unprecedented 31 total VMA wins.
Swift’s narrative style behind the camera has matured into a cornerstone of her creative identity over the past decade. A seven-time VMA nominee in the Best Director category, she has captured the trophy four times. Her director credits span a massive, self-helmed videography that includes “The Fate of Ophelia,” “Opalite,” “The Man,” “cardigan,” “willow,” All Too Well: The Short Film, “Anti-Hero,” “Bejeweled,” “Fortnight” featuring Post Malone, “I Can See You (Taylor’s Version) (From The Vault),” “Karma” featuring Ice Spice, and “Lavender Haze.”
According to the network, the Artist Director Honors celebrates a sustained and influential directorial catalog from artists who have asserted a singular voice behind the camera while continuously pushing visual boundaries. Swift also enters the 2026 ceremony as a dominant force in the competitive categories, trailing only Madonna (11) with nine total nominations across several major fields.
The 2026 MTV VMAs will air live nationwide from Los Angeles on Sunday, September 27, from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. ET on CBS. The broadcast will be simulcast on MTV and streamed live for Paramount+ Premium subscribers in the United States. Hip-hop icon Snoop Dogg will serve as master of ceremonies for the evening, which also features a landmark opening performance by Madonna—marking her first turn on the VMA stage in 23 years. Additional performers, presenters, and surprise guests will be revealed in the days leading up to the telecast.
MTV has not yet confirmed whether Swift will accept the historic honor in person at the venue.
