Vanessa Hudgens is taking a sweet trip down memory lane — all the way back to High School Musical and her real-life romance with co-star Zac Efron.

The actress, now 36, made rare comments about her relationship with Efron during an appearance on iHeartRadio’s Get Your Head In The Game podcast, recalling how the pair first connected during auditions for the Disney Channel hit.

“There was one other girl there for Gabriella, one other guy there for Troy. We swapped, mixed and matched and yeah, that was it,” Vanessa shared. “Coming from a musical theater background, that was and still is where my heart remains. So, I was very excited. Of course I was a child and paired with this boy and I was like, ‘Oh my god, he’s so cute.’ The chemistry was so real.”

On working with Efron, Vanessa admitted that their off-screen chemistry carried onto the screen. “Yeah, it really does [help]… especially when you’re young and it’s all sweet and innocent.”

She also reflected on how her real-life innocence mirrored her character. “It’s so funny looking back, I was so innocent but I was also playing so innocent, so it was like the hat on the hat. Like, wow, she’s really pure,” she said. “That totally was who I was, but the little rebellious teen side of me was like, ‘No, this isn’t me!’”

Hudgens and Efron dated for several years during the height of High School Musical mania, becoming one of Hollywood’s most beloved young couples at the time. Though they eventually parted ways, fans still look back fondly on their relationship.

Today, Vanessa has moved on happily — she’s married to professional baseball player Cole Tucker, and the couple is expecting their second child. Still, her rare reflections on Efron highlight just how formative those early years were, both personally and professionally.

For Disney fans, her memories offer a nostalgic reminder of the magic of High School Musical — and the real-life romance that made Troy and Gabriella’s love story all the more believable.
