Lee Sun-kyun, the talented South Korean actor renowned for his standout role in the award-winning movie Parasite, tragically passed away on Wednesday in Seoul, South Korea. He was only 48 years old.

Reports from The Korea Times detailed the distressing discovery. A man in his 40s was found unresponsive in a car at a park in Seoul around 10:30 am. When authorities arrived, they confirmed the identity of the individual as Lee. Adding to the devastation, a charcoal briquette was found in the passenger seat.

What’s even more heart-wrenching is that earlier that same morning, there was a report stating Lee had left home after leaving behind a memo that seemed to be a farewell note. His car was gone, prompting deep concern among those close to him.

Recent events had placed Lee under the spotlight. Suspicions surrounding his alleged use of marijuana and other illicit substances at the residence of a hostess working at a high-end bar in Seoul’s Gangnam district had prompted investigations. It was reported that these incidents had occurred multiple times since the beginning of the year.

Throughout the investigations, Lee had faced three rounds of intense questioning by the authorities. He maintained his innocence, claiming that he had been deceived by the hostess regarding the drugs and insisted that he had no prior knowledge of what he had consumed. In an effort to support his claims, he even requested a polygraph test.

This devastating loss leaves behind a grieving family—his wife, Jeon Hye-jin, and their two sons. Our hearts and thoughts go out to them during this incredibly distressing and challenging time. Rest in peace, Lee Sun-kyun.
