Selena Gomez, multi-talented actress, singer, and Rare Beauty entrepreneur, recently sat down for an interview with Fast Company. In this candid conversation, she dished on some pretty relatable topics, including how she managed her very public breakup and her Instagram journey.

Selena revealed that it was after her well-documented breakup with Justin Bieber that she decided to take a step back from her own Instagram account. She handed the reins over to her assistant, and her reason was pretty straightforward:

“I had just gotten my heart broken. I didn’t need to see what everyone was doing.”

Now, who can’t relate to that, right? Breakups can be tough enough without constantly being bombarded by other people’s happy moments and updates.

Selena didn’t stop there; she also shared how the platform affected her self-esteem, especially when it came to body image:

“Then there were those moments of not feeling positive about how I looked because of what I’d see on Instagram. Wow, I wish my body looked like that.”

That’s something many of us can understand in this age of filtered perfection on social media.

Speaking of Instagram, she addressed that headline-grabbing moment when fans noticed that she’d unfollowed Dua Lipa earlier this year. It turns out, it was just a mix-up:

“It was an accident! I was just cleaning up some of my Instagram. Then somebody called me and was like, ‘What happened with Dua?!’”

To prove that there were no hard feelings, Selena donned a Versace dress to an event the next day. It’s the same dress that came from a collaboration between the brand and Dua. Crisis averted!

Selena didn’t shy away from comparing her beauty to some other incredible talents like Beyonce and Adele. She acknowledged their stunning and impeccable qualities, saying:

“I’m not unattainable. I look at someone like Beyonce, and I am amazed. My jaw drops. Every part of her is just impeccable, and it’s just so beautiful. I went to her show and was blown away.”

But she also knows that she’s unique in her own right and embraces her own identity:

“But I’m just not that, and that’s okay. I’m me, and I’m a little silly, but I also like being sexy and fun, and I also want to do good with the time I have here. We need goddesses like Beyonce and Adele. But I’m just happy to be your best friend.”

That’s a refreshing perspective right there. Selena Gomez, embracing who she is, imperfections and all, and spreading positivity and authenticity. We’re all for it!
