Sinead O’Connor has sadly passed away.

The singer became an international star back in 1990 with her cover of Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2 U”. The Irish Times was first to report the news of her passing.

Her family confirmed the sad news in a statement:

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinead.

Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.”

Sinead was born in Grlanageary, Ireland in 1966. She went on to become one of the country’s most renowned musicians, along with U2, The Cranberries, and Enya, all of whom skyrocketed to worldwide prominence in the ‘80s and ‘90s.

Her personal life was marred by tragedy as well as struggles with mental illness. In January 2022, her 17-year-old son Shane died by suicide after he went missing in Ireland. Sinead has publicly threatened suicide herself several times in recent years.

Earlier this month, Sinead took to Facebook to write:

“Hi All, recently moved back to London after 23 years absence. Very happy to be home 🙂

Soon finishing my album. Release early next year 🙂 Hopefully touring Australia and New Zealand toward end 2023. Europe, USA and other territories beginning early 2025.”

No cause of death has been released at this time. Sinead is survived by three other children.

Our thoughts are with Sinead’s loved ones.
