Sofia Vergara is looking back on her cancer journey.

The 49-year-old actress took to social media in honor of World Cancer Day on Friday (February 4) to reflect on her diagnosis at 28. She posted a throwback photo of herself with a visible surgery scar on her neck, and wrote:

“At 28, ‘Cancer’ was not a word I expected to hear. It was just a routine checkup. But the doctors found a lump in my throat, and that word became part of my story. I spent countless hours in radiation treatments, and, eventually, in surgery.

Today, I get to call myself a cancer survivor.”

Of the photo, Sofia said:

“This was my first acting class after diagnosis and treatment, and seeing the scar on my throat reminds me of how blessed I felt that day—and every day since.

I’m lucky and grateful to be in a position to share my story and say: early prevention is so important!! Schedule your annual check up for this year if you haven’t already 😘 #worldcancerday #closethecaregap”

Sofia first spoke about her bout with thyroid cancer back in 2011, when the then-39-year-old star revealed:

“I was very young. and when they tell you that word, it’s, like, ‘What are you talking about?’ You always think, ‘death.’ That’s all you think when they tell you that. So it was, it was pretty scary.

When you have a responsibility, like a kid or like a family, you cannot give yourself the luxury of going, getting depressed. So I think it’s more like a unconscious thing of just, you know, keep – let’s keep going, let’s keep going.”
