Andrew Garfield made a huge return to his iconic Spider-Man role when he made a surprise appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home — and it was a return that he had to keep under wraps at all costs. Even if it meant lying to his Spider-Man co-star and former flame!
Spider-Man: No Way Home reunited three Spider-Man iterations, with Andrew’s Amazing Spider-Man character appearing alongside Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man. The two returning stars joined current Spider-Man, Tom Holland, in an epic film twist that had critics and fans all over the world going nuts in the best way.
The unprecented cinematic feat was rumored about for months and months prior to the film’s premiere, and so everyone involved in the movie had to guard the secret with their life. This meant that as Andrew was hounded by persistent questions last year about a possible return, he had to keep on lying through his teeth — even to Emma Stone, who starred opposite Andrew in the Amazing Spider-Man films. They also dated for many years.
In an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Andrew revealed that Emma reached out to him amidst all the speculations, trying to get the truth out of him:
‘Emma kept on texting me. She was like, ‘Are you in this new Spider-Man film?’ And I was like, ‘I don’t know what you’re talking about.’”
He hilariously added that she kept on trying to get the real score out of him:
“She was like, ‘Shut up. Just tell me.’
I’m like, ‘I honestly don’t know…’”
So what happened when Emma finally watched the movie and found out the truth? Andrew cutely shared:
“And then she saw it. She was like, ‘You’re a jerk.’”
One thing’s clear: The former celebrity couple goals pair have managed to stay pretty great friends. So cute!
